Indian girl, 16, 'killed herself over fears Big Bang experiment could lead to end of the world'

If people choose to read the Daily Mail instead of New Scientist then they only have themselves to blame for not knowing about this long ago and for being fed doomsday stories.
It's the media in general, but the tabloid press is merely more extreme.

Did you read the comments on the article?! Wow! Such ignorance is hard to fathom. "will come in a few weeks time when the huge explosion actually occurs--not to mention the after effects of the black hole atoms reproducing at an alarming rate which will effect us in a few years time" Black hole atoms! Are there such things? And if it is a black hole, how will it take years to effect(sic) us?

This is the problem with sensationalist media. British tabloid "The Sun" yesterday had a giant back page spread saying "Black Hole" and that the world may end at 8.30am. Stupid.

Sadly, this could be completely true. They've become very nonsensical here. Come on, there are a dozen 24x7 news channels and how probably can they be showing "news" all the time? They have to make up something. For the past week or so, the LHC should have been feeding the news channels and they must have been pulling it out on ALL possible directions. The worst part will be that the anchor who presents this documentary news to you will not know a crap about particle acceleration. Complete idiots. I stopped watching news channels about 4 months back, when they were interviewing some actress, because an "item dance" that she performed for a movie was removed from that movie by the censor board. They were asking her "thoughts" about that. No matter what news channel I put, I could not escape this "news" for a couple of days. I had to give up.

While an item dance in a bollywood movie might be a silly thing, the fact that it was removed from a movie by a Censor board is actually a quite serious matter(for a country that supposedly has freedom of speech and expression). On the other hand I recently saw a screen shot of an Indian TV news program that had a large headline screaming: "Polics Commisioner's Dog Found" :-D

Huh? Freedom of speech and expression does neither expressly nor implicitly allows someone to include a nasty strip dance in a movie that demands a "Suitable for 13 years and above" certificate. They must either shoot an adult movie or keep the movie really suitable for 13+. Actually, the WTF in the news was that all the news channels were interviewing the actress who performed in the dance, because the dance was nuked. Nobody cared about censor board or freedom of speech or things like that. That, I was talking about. :)

From the perspective of the Sun, it would be the only logical move. Such headlines sell better. Aren't they aiming at selling as much as possible? Who would be interested in a story about this research if the world didn't end after it?

Based on some articles I read last night, it might be murder and the guilty folks may be trying to push this as a suicide. My cousin told me that several Indian TV channels built up so much fear over the LHC experiments that some people took time off work and went home to their families because if the world did end they wanted to be with family :sigh:

They should realise that a line's been crossed when you're making money by scaring people into potentially killing themselves.

"They" don't get paid to watch out for lines.. I agree with you, don't get me wrong here. It is said that the pen is mightier than the sword, but somehow, people are more careful with swords than with words. It's money that makes the world go round, and there is no profit in responsibility. Only costs :(

If the world is going to end why bother o kill yourself? Such is the state of the world today. See some of the comments. A secret experiment? Yeah, right. http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/worldnews/article-1054434/Indian-girl-16-killed-fears-Big-Bang-experiment-lead-end-world.html[^]

Healthy people people don't commit suicide over a piece of sad/scary news. People attempt/commit suicide because of mental/psychological problems. If the LHC wasn't available as an excuse the poor girl would have simply found another excuse, and noone except her family/friends would have heard the story. The problem isn't idiot reporters it's a lack of adequate mental health care/intervention. Before anyone thinks I'm India bashing the same thing happens worldwide because because friends/family either don't notice the warning signs (if any), or don't think they're serious enough that actual intervention is required until it's too late.

People can do stupid things based on what's written in the press. However, it doesn't absolve them of responsibility for their actions; just as people can commit criminal acts after consuming too much alcohol which also doesn't resolve them of responsibility for their actions. I wouldn't ban or censor the media but we can still observe that it often says silly things.
