Original Post[^] This really pisses me off :/ These ignorant fools (the commentors on the newspaper website) have the gall to only read tabloid newspapers then complain about these projects that threaten the world being kept secret. If your going to read shit like that then you can expect two things, first a project as massive as this thats being done for the furthering of man kind won't be mentioned, it doesn't sell, second if theres anyway to spin it into a doomsday machine then they'll jump all over it. The problem here is not doomsday machines being kept secret, it's people being stupid ignorant fucks. If you watched science documentaries, if you read technology/science news sources you would have heard about all this a long time ago, and you'd have heard how there is an extremely small amount of risk. (Sorry thats a bit more aggressive and offencive than my usual posts, but I think it conveys me thoughts and feels on this matter with some clarity.) That said I still feel sorry for that poor girl, she was obviously not very reasonable or stable and my condolences go to all those who's lives were enriched by her time here. The only good thing which may come out of this media craze is a possible boost of the interest in physics from the masses. Already our public TV channel announced they will start a series on the topic.

Thankfully here in the UK we have a number of channels that either regularly show documentaries or are dedicated to them. I've been watching various things over the last year or two that has both directly or indirectly been about the LHC. A lot of the scientists involved have done shows about associated areas of science then at the end explained how they work at the LHC and what work they'll be doing. All this is good but I doubt that any of this will make any difference to the ignorant ... they'll just bury their heads in the sand and carry on saying "but these scientists are evil! they proved that with the LHC and so we can't trust them" ... which is some amazing logic :P

Yesterday I was thinking it would be nice if these sources of miss information could be prosecuted for any deaths caused. But having had more time to mull it over that wouldn't be feasible as then all new sources wouldn't be able to print anything controversial.

I've waited 15 years since I first heard about LHC to see what it does to further particle physics, and the day it finally comes on line, the best the 'news' can do is babble about mini-black holes and the end of the world. Pitiful. But I can't help but wonder, what the hell is going on in India? A couple of weeks ago there's a post about hundreds (or thousands, I don't remember) hospitalized because they went completely blind staring at the sun trying to see the Virgin Mary, and now this. But I guess I can't fault the Indian population for being ignorant of quantum mechanics when 99% of the American population has no better understanding of science. So much for humans being the 'thinking beast.'
