Are you ready for 64 bit Windows?
-
I have been running Vista Ultimate 64 since the betas and have no real issue with it. Kind of nice for security reasons of having a 64 bit IE that does not allow active-x, not to mention it is fast. For many though, they seem to drag their feet to 64 bit unlike when the world moved to 32 bit. Here are a couple an article from eWeek on it: http://www.eweek.com/c/a/ Security/When-Windows-Goes-All-64Bit/?kc=EWKNLEDP09122008A[^] So, if you are not ready, why not? 64 bit CPU/Mother boards are cheap as is RAM!

I've been running 64 bit linux for a long time now. Works great with my new and old hardware.

Many vendors are not. I've tried 64-bit 3 different times and each time drivers send me crashing back to 32-bit wishing for more... bits...bits...bits... it's all in bits and pieces...

How old is your 64 bit hardware?

The new hardware I bought last month. The old stuff is a bit older than 3 years.

I've been running XP Pro x64 for nearly a year No driver issues anymore (ironically we probably have Vista to thank for that) - not the usual Vista problems either, but still >3GB ram (4GB in this box) and the up to 30% speed up (in the rare case that you happen to find a native 64bit program that is CPU-bound  ) Only 1 program has failed to run so far, an ancient disassembler which turned out to be a 16bit program

I am using a complimentary copy of Windows Server 2008 64bit with no issues, apart from an ancient (about y2k) webcam that was quickly replaced with a newer one. Most reasonably recent hardware now comes with 64-bit drivers. The biggest benefit of having a 64 bit OS is of course the craploads of ram it can support, but I found it was an important lesson in programming too, since it forced me to learn the pitfalls of .net P/Invokes on x86 and x64 machines. One thing I really miss is the 16-bit Microsoft Tetris I kept on all of my machines since 1991: I grew up with that game, and now I can play it only through a VM. How sad. I really hope someone at Microsoft will open source it, one day.

I suspect that the mass majority of people will be "ready" for it, when they can no longer get a 32-bit OS, or when they absolutely need it for apps that push the envelope, like games or video processing or you name it. Or we might need it for the next release of Office :-)

I've been running Vista64 on two machines for the better part of a year, and the only problem I had with it was my old antivirus, which I subsequently dumped. Haven't had a single issue of unsupported hardware, and my machine has been fine. The antivirus was the one and only program and/or peripheral that didn't work straight-up after installation. I've had one bluescreen since January 2007, and it was directly related to a buggy beta nVidia driver for their 8800-series card way back last year. I develop and play games on the machine, so I give it a hefty workout, and it seems to just keep working happily. I'd like to say that I notice that Vista is faster as a 64-bit incarnation, but it's been so long since I used its 32-bit version that I can't honestly say. I look forward to the day when programs ship with x86 and x64 compiled versions, and then to the day when they only ship with x64 compiled versions.

Been running Vista x64 (Ultimate) since betas like you and not experienced any major issues. The only problem I have so far is that my el-cheapo wireless card doesn't have any drivers but then again that isn't too much of an issue since it's a desktop. In fact I just ordered another 4GB of RAM for it, should make running those Virtual Machines a whiz. :-D

As far as Vista was concerned, that wasn't even in the cards. I'm running XP-64 and loving it. I was hesitant to move to 64-bit because a) I only had 2gb RAM up until recently, so there was really no point, and b) because of possible driver issues (finding them rather than their reliability). The only software I've found that won't work is Jezzball. I have 64-bit drivers for all of my hardware (including my printers), and everything is running fine. Before you move to 64-bit Windows, make double-damn sure that you can get drivers for ALL of your hardware. Other than that, you should be good to go.
