Whitepapers & Research text

I think they detect Google based on the IP address, not user agent. Lots of those sites offer campus licenses to universities, you might be able to access the PDFs from the university network. My university has such a license, I just have to VPN into their network and those pay-per-paper sites start offering free downloads.
I will double check with my University tomorrow, but the librarian is a right b4stard and would simply sabotage any attempts I might make out of sheer spite. Not to mention that this is the Middle East we're talking about.

I do think there's one thing you can do, but not sure on the legality of this. Plus not sure if it works. I remember I was looking for information on a certain topic (cant remember what it was..), and google returned an impressive number of PDFs. When I clicked on any of them, however, I was taken to a page that said something along the lines of "pay us $XYZ and we'll give you access to the file". So, google saw a pdf file, and indexed it, while I had to pay. I didnt think of this at the time, but I guess you could switch your browser's UserAgent string to the one that Googlebot uses, and perhaps that way you will be able to see the pdfs (if you get links like I did). Naturally, I cant find a single link like that to test the method :(:^)
"impossible" is just an opinion.

Or just click the 'cached' link in the Google search results.

Its true I study at an American university, however, the locale happens to be the Middle East. I'll stop right there whilst you let that thought roll about in your mind.

Libraries full of books, but they all happen to be copies of the Koran?

Anyone know of a site where I might find whitepapers or research text for free? Specifically looking for bioinformatics/computational biology, machine learning and OS security. Subjects are extremely varied I know. This is very firmly in the world of academia. Google Scholar returns a zillion hits, but it almost seems like every single good possible can only be downloaded from acm or ieee for $$$.

Try Google advanced search and search for your specific topics but limit the domains to .edu. I've had a lot of luck finding technical papers posted on professor's and grad student's personal pages on the university sites.
If you don't have the data, you're just another asshole with an opinion.

First find an exact paper you want then search for the exact title of the paper. Most of the times authors keep a draft version on their website. -Saurabh

I really think Chris ought to let us vote twice. I'd like to give you a 5 both for the post and the sig.

No, not even that. Simply antiquated from when the library was opened.

I'm a member of IEEE. If you email me links I can probably get some for you.

I owe you :) I'll see what I can do about those links this afternoon. Thanks Leckey

So you mean you can't find information on bioinformatics in the Corpus Aristotelicum? Well tickle me pink. :omg:

I can't take too much credit for the sig, I have the shirt. Although their phrasing is a bit more PC than mine. ;)

I have not seen anything in my inbox; have you sent anything directly to me? I don't think the email link works.
Blog link to be reinstated at a later date.
I haven't sent anything yet Leckey. Sorry, got bogged down with this whole PhD thing. Need to find a school that has my research interests and pays a stipend large enough to support me and my family. Not easy. I'll email something tomorrow (my time) if that's OK with you? Hey, didn't you mention once that you want to get your PhD? What particular field and from where? (getting ideas for the location, I want to do either Bioinformatics/Computational biology or Robotics [Control])

Not a problem-- I just wanted to make sure I didn't miss an email. I am still working on my Masters. It is MS Engineering with an emphasis in Comp Sci because that was all that was available where I lived. I have looked at switching to other programs including an online MIS program from Dakota State University. (Yes, different from South Dakota State University!) I would like to focus on linguistics and computers; most MCAT and other higher test use computers to calculate written scores which I think the algorithms interesting. Otherwise I would like to study inflections on other languages. My graduate school advisor is from the southern part of South Korea and they always sound "angry" when talking on the phone in his native language; it's just the inflections. I'm interested in looking at if someone is lying or what their mood is based on their native language and what they have learned for a second language. I have not found any studies about this so I think it would be somewhat ground-breaking. I think it would be interesting to use robotics to look at micro-facial expressions which the FBI and other agencies look at from tape to see if someone is lying. An interviewer might not recognize them immediately, but if you look at a tape in slow-motion you can see it better. Program the robot to notify the interviewer right away if they look like they are decietfull/truthfull and maybe what questions to ask if questionable.\ Sometimes I wish I lived in a bigger population area! I'd love to see you take on some of my ideas, but I'm sure you'll do great no matter what you look at!
