Non-MMORPG's? Do they exist anymore?
-
Seems like the very large majority of games today are some sort of MMORPG. I can understand why; most people prefer to play these games. I, on the other hand, don't play games very often anymore, and don't like the idea of letting a group of people down because I don't play for 2 weeks. I prefer a game that I can play for a few hours, then not touch it again for 3 weeks because I've been busy with work or kids. Are there any great PC-based non-MMORPG's available that anyone would recommend? I mean new ones? I know there's a ton of older games, but I'd like to find a few that have today's graphics without having to commit to an online personality.

Isn't a non-MMORPG just an RPG?

Yeah, but I'm talking specifically something with modern graphics, but not online. Like Final Fantasy, except I don't think 12 is a PC game, only PS3 (I have to check, though).

Seconded. And I third and fourth the expansion packs, well worth it.

Just finished Company of Heroes (with only complaint being that the difficulty level varied widely.) One son and I just finished FEAR. A little repetitive, but it had a great atmosphere. One son is replaying Half-Life 2 Episode 1 & 2. Far Cry is older, but pretty good. Played Crysis demo. Am bidding for a copy on eBay. Warhammer 40,000 and Command & Conquer 3 both hold up pretty well. My youngest daughter would recommend Roller Coaster Tycoon 1 and 2 (she didn't like 3 much.) A few months back, I replayed No One Lives Forever and No One Lives Forever 2: A Spy In Harm's Way and the highest difficulty level. Great fun.

Well, Oblivion, Witcher, Mass Effect, Loki: Heroes of Mythology, S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl are a few off the top of my head...I am sure there are many more... plus Diablo 3 is also under development :)

If you're looking for an RPG try The Witcher, the Enhanced Edition is due for release any day now.

As others pointed out - The Witcher (gotta be a patriot, it's Polish :P). Neverwinter Nights 2 is pretty good. And if you want next-gen (or current-gen..) graphics then Mass Effect (a X360 port).

I guess Office is a PC-based non-MMORPG, what are you looking for? As for single player CRPG's: DSA 4 (Drakensang[^]) ist out, and while it mostly fails at the story telling - to linear - it makes an excellent "Adventure with RPG elements", implementing one of the most beautiful P&P RPG rule sets. The previous version saw a very ill translation to the US market, though - I hope this time it's better. I've seen the trailer fo Fallout 3 yesterday, looks like a dull shooter with a lot of "this isn't just a dull shooter" elements. So, I installed Fallout 1, since I never got around really playing it. I had to butcher XP a bit to make it install, but now it's running fine. Doesn't look to bad, and damn, I am hooked :)

i know how you feel. I used to play Battlefield desert combat and while it was online and multiplayer you could rock up for an hour or so have some fun and get back to the real world again. Often i'd meet people in game who I'd seen before and we'd go off and have a little adventure but no-one felt let down if you didn't play for hours or didn't show up for a while. The studios have a vested interest in making players play non-stop. It increases the number of players online at all times and means that when the upgrade packs are released they have an instant market without having to publicise the release to the extent that they would with an entirely new franchise. Need for speed was fun on-line and off-line if racing games are more your thing. I can't think of any games i've played offline in the last 5 years apart from that. Russell

www.hellgatelondon.com[^] sounds like it could be just the thing for you. Unfortunately, there are a few caveats, not least of which is that the company no longer exists, no-one knows how long the servers are going to stay up and you can't subscribe to get the additional content any more... Having said that, you should be able to pick it up from the bargain bin for around $20. You can play it offline (single player) or online, you can solo the entire game or you can group up, there are no "raiding parties", no forced character builds, quests generally take about 15 minutes to (at most) an hour to complete, and the whole futuristic templar/hunter/cabalist angle is a breath of fresh air on the whole swords and sorcery theme. The graphics are top-notch and the action is non-stop. The story isn't very deep, but the amount of customization available in your character, weapons and skills will keep you occupied for quite some time... The single player game is best described as a FPS/RPG, while you can add "MMO-lite" to that description for the multiplayer game. Imagine the love-child of Doom and Diablo2 with DirectX-10 graphics. Anyway, for $20 you might as well give it a shot - even if the servers go down, you'll always be able to play the single player version...
