Well having my tongue pierced and considering to get my lip pierced, just thought it would be good to get some feed back on what other people think...

You can't look professional and have visible nonconventional piercings. If you want to work in a starbucks it won't matter, but you're going to make things much harder for yourself getting any sort of white collar job.

Here Here.....something similar happened to me - in an interview I was wearing a white shirt, black tattoos on my arms showed through, et voila - "sorry, although this isn't a customer facing role per-se, you may have to go on site from time to time, so we can't employ you"

I wouldn't say harder, I mean, I know a few developers that look pretty damn wierd that have decent jobs and due to the fact that im a developer myself, I don't see a problem with it because I don't have to work with the customers face to face :)

I've had several piercings over the years, nothing below the neck. Yes, I had a ring in my neck above my collar bone. I still have a few in one ear, but I only wear black or silver rings in them to keep them more professional looking. Even though I like piercings, I would never hire someone with a piercing in their lip. Looks too unprofessional.

No no and thrice no! No matter what the law is and equal opps and all that, if I were interviewing someone who is a walking freak show, my judgement would be somewhat clouded by their appearance. This could be thought of as non-pc but that's the way the world is.

I still remember having to write your own code in FORTRAN rather than be a cut and paste merchant being pampered by colour coded Intellisense - ahh proper programming - those were the days :)

if your app goes live at a customer and a huge bug is found you'd probably have too... That's what i was at Denel the other day, fixing stuff the "technicians" are supposed to know.

Just look at a CIO meeting or a CEO meeting and tell me how many of them have visible piercings and tattoos. I'm not saying that this is right, but the fact is that most people will not give you higher jobs if you have those things on your body.

I don't mind em personally, my gf has her ears pierced in 3 places on each ear, a stud in her nose and 4 tattoos (all easily concealed if necessary), and myself I would like a tattoo similar to that of hers on my inside arm, but I digress... I understand how it can look unprofessional, but I still think it's discrimination. I'll stop here before it ventures to wards soapboxy material :)

IF the PTB find it objectionable they'll find an excuse to fire you after the fact. Probably by putting a ban on it in the employee dress code/etc. I know we have visible tats banned and think body piercing is as well, we have 3x 250 person buildings in the area and I don't ever recall seeing anyone with piercings outside the ears.

Piercings are disgusting! I'd get a tattoo on my back, where I can't see it. And it would have to be something really meaningful, colorful and correctly spelled. Then again, I hate pain, so I'd be content with just a custom-made t-shirt with the same thing on the back.

I wouldn't say harder, I mean, I know a few developers that look pretty damn wierd that have decent jobs and due to the fact that im a developer myself, I don't see a problem with it because I don't have to work with the customers face to face :)

Even as a mere Minion1, I've met our clients occasionally. Both formally (driving a PC during a demo and when we hosted an interest group meeting), and informally (ran into them with coworkers in the halls, and when I picked the same restaurant they and the more senior people were eating at). Even if you're working on strictly internal projects running into other peoples customers in the hall occasionally is inevitable.

Today's lesson is brought to you by the word "niggardly". Remember kids, don't attribute to racism what can be explained by Scandinavian language roots. -- Robert Royall
