(Sorry for my bad English in advance.) I was wondering what music taste programmers have. Actually I'm feeling quite out of place with my two music genres, Heavy Metal and Blues-Rock. I mean a programmer is usually a well educated, smart and talented person, shouldn't he/she not listen to Heavy Metal? Wouldn't normal people think that that programmer who listens to Heavy Metal is a MORON? Personally I love the electric guitar very much, which reminds me on a newcomer called Anthony Gomes who plays on the e-guitar very well. The song War On War really rocks! Here is a link on YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZbbpYLU21zA[^] But keep in mind that Anthony Gomes is actually Blues-Rock and not Heavy Metal in the way of Metallica or Scorpions. Though, I liked Metallica until the point where I had enough of swearing so I moved to Scorpions. Here is my favorite song of the album Humanity Hour 1: The Game of Life. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OAyihmJkH0E[^] Or listen to the song Humanity, did you know that you are a drop in the rain, just the number not a name? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tjb0mld4SpM[^] ... and Humanity goodbye!

Here[^] is the CP group on last.fm. You sign up, download and install their plugin, and listen to music as usual. It builds a profile and recommends new artists, etc. Very cool. Here[^] is my profile. I have to say, Runrig is my current favourite.

    Cheers, Vıkram.

Have you read the text at the very first line, here and at the first post? Yes, "Sorry for my bad English in advance!". To get things straight, my posting is just a humble intention to improve my English. Thank you and please don't tell me that I should go somewhere else. I listen to Rap, Hip-Hop, Techno, Country, Classical, Heavy-Metal, Glamor Metal, Death-Metal, Metal-Metal, Blues, New Age, Grunge, Alternate Rock, etc. I think about the only thing I don't listen to is Christian and Gospel although when done by bands like U2 its not too bad. All people do all things. Music, Religion, Politics etc. is engaged by everyone good, bad, smart and dumb. So trying to group people into little categories (ex Heavy-Metal = moron) serves little purpose other than to alienate people. BTW can't you get clean versions of most albums? Walmart maybe?

Well, I like Metal but I'm careful with it. For some reason I have a BIG problem with swearing, that's why I left Metallica and went to Scorpions. That's also why I haven't explored the world of Heavy Metal that much because they usually swear. But however for now I have Scorpions and there is Blues-Rock, too.

Understandable. I don't mind the swearing as long as it's not there for shock value (like a lot of Gangsta rap), but if the music is good, and the lyrics actually tell a story that makes sense, I don't mind it. If you want a good metal band that doesn't swear, check out Evanescence, another of my favorite bands. They're labeled as an EMO band, but the music has roots in rock. Here's a great sample of their music if you're not familiar with them: Lithium[^]

I mean a programmer is usually a well educated, smart and talented person, shouldn't he/she not listen to Heavy Metal?

Progressive metal is metal for educated people. Therefore, a real programmer MUST be exposed to prog metal. Another two generes to which a real programmer must be exposed are jazz and classical music.

                              It's very good indeed.

If you can play The Dance of Eternity (Dream Theater), then we shall make a band.

From Heavy Metal to House and blues, rock, pop, I think that almost everything... of course some groups of each kind, not everyhting, but I like all the kinds of music and depending on the mood I tend to torture tha guys on my department with Marilyn Manson or Metallica and some days I use House just to relax a little bit...

What's wrong with hard rock and blues? Programmers ( and other technically oriented people ) enjoy complex relationships, things which engage the mind completely. That's why we love finding technical solutions to everyday problems, and making them elegant when we can. Music, in general, is mathematical, an interweaving of mathematical relationships of melody, harmony, rythm and interval. It engages the mind, heart and soul in a way no other medium can. Yeah, the general noise known as rap or hiphop doesn't contain much of any of these - least of all, talent, but most genre of music are fundamentally technical in nature, and appeal to technical people. Those of us in need of sedation after a hectic week might prefer country, but rock in all its forms, and blues/jazz are delightful entertainment for an agile mind. Enjoy, and branch out some. Try some Bach or Mozart for a change... :-D

Have you read the text at the very first line, here and at the first post? Yes, "Sorry for my bad English in advance!". To get things straight, my posting is just a humble intention to improve my English. Thank you and please don't tell me that I should go somewhere else. Because I don't think I have broken any rules!

Work seems easier while his music is playing in background. ;)

On the head Roger, the complexity is part of what attracts me to rock. With the large dynamic range there can be several layers present at once.
