What music does the programmer hear?

What's wrong with hard rock and blues? Programmers ( and other technically oriented people ) enjoy complex relationships, things which engage the mind completely. That's why we love finding technical solutions to everyday problems, and making them elegant when we can. Music, in general, is mathematical, an interweaving of mathematical relationships of melody, harmony, rythm and interval. It engages the mind, heart and soul in a way no other medium can. Yeah, the general noise known as rap or hiphop doesn't contain much of any of these - least of all, talent, but most genre of music are fundamentally technical in nature, and appeal to technical people. Those of us in need of sedation after a hectic week might prefer country, but rock in all its forms, and blues/jazz are delightful entertainment for an agile mind. Enjoy, and branch out some. Try some Bach or Mozart for a change... :-D

From Heavy Metal to House and blues, rock, pop, I think that almost everything... of course some groups of each kind, not everyhting, but I like all the kinds of music and depending on the mood I tend to torture tha guys on my department with Marilyn Manson or Metallica and some days I use House just to relax a little bit...

Well, there we have my two ex-girls, Marilyn Manson and Metallica. Yeah, I listened once to Marilyn Manson, too. Don't know why I dropped that, perhaps, ehhh, you know. So, how is the new album of Metallica? I think it's being called Death Magnetic, right? Not that I would start to listen to them again, but I'm curious because it is supposed to break some selling records if my information is correct.

On the head Roger, the complexity is part of what attracts me to rock. With the large dynamic range there can be several layers present at once. :cool:

That would be a change for me. Not sure if the woman would like that. She makes me turn off opera especially if it is sung in a language that I don't know and I only know english and a little Spanish. Never heard any Spanish opera though...

I mean a programmer is usually a well educated, smart and talented person, shouldn't he/she not listen to Heavy Metal? Wouldn't normal people think that that programmer who listens to Heavy Metal is a MORON? Personally I love the electric guitar very much, which reminds me on a newcomer called Anthony Gomes who plays on the e-guitar very well. The song War On War really rocks! Metallica and Bach - both have similarities believe it or not. Bach used to love key changes and Metallica do this as well change tempo in the middle of some songs which was a feature of the early baroque period.

It might be fun to broaden her horizons a bit, then. I can agree with her about opera, though - I enjoy the Phantom immensely, but can't tolerate the screeching that passes for music in Italian operas. I'd love to hear a Spanish opera, but I can't recall hearing of any. Do they do anything but mariachi music these days?

I know programmers who like heavy metal, some who like blues, some who like Mozart, some who like Pink Floyd...and myself, who likes them all (also some big band music LOL)...Your talent is not determined by your musical tastes, but idiots with blinders are easily identified by asserting that determination.

Interesting question, I do not think you can draw any great conclusions here as I do not think most programmers listen to the same stuff but I will throw my 2cents in... To best describe what I listen to is to say what I do not listen to as I have been known to like a lot of different genres (rap, r&b, metal, classic rock, disco, country, alternative, blues ...) . I am not real big on polka though. Perhaps if I looked more into that I could find something I liked..

I remember my brother introducing me to Queen's first two albums...especially Queen II, with "Seven Seas of Rhye", in which I can hear Bach being chanelled by these classically-trained musicians. Gotta love it, gotta love it. Compared to Queen, Richie Blackmour, Ozzie, Ted Nugent, and JudasPriest, Metallica is now and ever will be a set of derivative posers.
