Since there's no Utilities forum...

I have a Maxtor external USB hard drive that I keep all of my personal files on (music, web sites I'm working on, etc.) that I attach to my laptop when I'm at home. Sometimes, I can get Windows to let go of the drive through the USB control applet by restarting IIS, or restarting SQL Express. However, I usually have to reboot Windows to disconnect it. Sure, I can just unplug the USB cable, but I don't like doing that, as I often can't reattach to the drive. If, however, I successfully disconnect from the applet, I never have problems reconnecting the drive. So my question is this. Does anybody know of a utility that will tell you what executable(s) are currently "talking" to an external media drive? For example, if I closed iTunes, but it didn't shut down correctly, the application would list iTunes.exe as referencing the drive. Thanks in advance.

Try this one: http://ccollomb.free.fr/unlocker/[^] It will tell you wich program is locking a file and give the option to unlock it (if possible)
Cool! I'll give it a try. Thanks!

Looks good. I'll put that on my list to download and try. I have used process explorer for this but this program looks easier to use.

Process Explorer allows you to search for open files and handles. While I've only ever used it to see which process was locking, say, C:\Vikram\Trades.xls, I *think* it also allows you to search substrings. In other words, searching for J:\ would list the offending processes where J is your external drive. Process Explorer, of course, does much, much more. http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb896653.aspx[^]
Cheers, Vıkram.
