Nerdy way to lose weight [modified]
-
I just want to put in a good word for a windows application designed to help you lose weight. I was 230 pounds in March when I started excercising again regularly and stalled out at 216 for the longest time. I started using this program with the free trial and it became clear that I was eating slightly too much and overestimating the calories burned in my excercise. It has a useful graph and built in database of foods for calorie counting and it also helps track the amount of water you drink and recommends when you are behind and from observation of how often I have to go I discovered I was normally pretty dehydrated and it's very accurate. It also shows you what nutrients you are behind or ahead on based on the foods you eat. The best part is that it calculates your metabolic rate so that you really can't go wrong even if you don't enter the food faithfully or incorrectly choose the foods and their calories from the list because you weigh yourself at the same time every day, enter it and it readjusts automatically on a daily basis to keep you on track. If you are the sort of person that goes for all these crazy fad diets you might not like it much because it's based on the simple reality of calories in and out. So far it's working great for me after a couple of weeks I'm not back on track weight wise and understanding much better how much I can eat and how many calories are in the things I eat. It's reasonably priced at $39.99 has a pretty good interface, they have a free trial period and mostly it takes all the guess work out of losing, gaining or maintaining weight. Also for us programmer nerdy types it's geeky fun graphing the calories and weight goals, watching your weight follow the projected path to the goal date of your diet etc. http://www.dietpower.com/[^]

Yeah, there are easily 42 billion different sites / software for tracking weight and calories, I like the diet power software because it actually adjusts for your metabolic rate which it calculates automatically and the knowing which nutrients you are actually getting in your diet and which ones you are low on makes all kinds of sense as well. If they had that in a free one then that would be ideal.

I downloaded the trial and installed it. Then I watched the Quick Start video at DietPower's website. The program seems quite complete and easy to use. This is just what I need to kickstart myself (yet again) to drop the extra pounds I've put on in the last 2 years. Thanks!

In a similar vein I have been on the Zone diet for the past month and have lost 22 pounds. Here comes the weird bit - I am actually eating more now that before I was on the diet! The diet is based on controlling your insulin level and basically while I have been on it (and the idea is to stay on it for life) I have rarely experienced hunger pangs. Because I am not someone who particularly enjoys abstract theory I started by buying a book called "Zone Meals in Seconds" so that I could actually start on the diet rather than reading 'about' it. Anyway I don't mean to steal your thunder, I just wanted to add another success story to the pot. ;)
