I was wondering what the voting age was in various contries around the world (those that allow voting of course). In the US it is 18, is that pretty standard? Also, what age restrictions are put on other things (if any)? Where I live (Washington State, USA): Driving: 16 Gambling/smoking/voting: 18 Alcohol: 21 Ryan Johnston

Here in the Bluegrass state: Age you can get a driver's license: 16 <sarcasm> Age to rent a car: 25 </sarcasm> Okay, so that's not *technically* true, but there are only a handful of rental companies that'll rent to anyone under 25, and few of them are ever at airports or places where you might need to rent a car. You are special and unique, just like everyone else.

In India voting age was reduced to 18 yrs in 1989.. Driving License: 21yrs, verified 'cos you need to show proof of age.. Alcohol:21yrs, legally but havent seen any beer/liquor vendor(both come under liquor in india) really implement this, guess that u must look old enough Smoking:i guess this is shocking but there seem to be no legal age to smoke. i also see a number of street urchins smoke variants of cheap cigarettes.... regards Agnihothra

Where I live [Ireland]: Driving: 17 --> but if your male you can't realistically afford to driver until your about 25.. INsurance costs are so high. Smoking: 18 Voting: 18 Alcohol: 18 --> In a pub etc. In your own home, with adult supervision, any age.

de - might be inacurate: Driving: 18 (small motor bikes 16) Alcohol (up to wine) & smoking: 16 the real stuff (liquer/brands): 18 voting: 18 gambling: dunno, we don't care that much legally of full age: 21 (dunny for what this is still relevant, as you're fully liable under law starting with 18, partially liable with 14 (and at 16 I think, a bit more))

I had an american friend at Uni (he was doing an exchange year thing). He said how much more relaxed it felt in England, since people wanting a beer could just walk down to their uni bar, and buy a beer, and drink it. There is nothing comparible with the american frat system here, simply because there's no need to smuggle alcohol about (and since alcohol is legal, people don't get utterly pissed in mad binge drinking sessions) And of course most get the smuggled alcohol binge sessions out of their systems at around the age of 16 instead -- Help me! I'm turning into a grapefruit!
