      From the article:

Computer manufacturer Dell recently even tried to trademark the term "cloud computing", although its application was refused.

Further proof (if you needed it) that Dell are complete idiots. Thank goodness someone in the trademark registering department had some common sense that day.

Presumably the Met. Office* had a prior claim? Keith * Lest I be accused of the same buzz phrase/parochial word fondness I criticise elsewhere, that's standard UK speak for the Meteorological Office

They have 2 Cray Supercomputers for working out what the weather might be like, and they call them "The Cray Twins"! :)

"One reason you should not use web applications to do your computing is that you lose control," he said. "It's just as bad as using a proprietary program. Do your own computing on your own computer with your copy of a freedom-respecting program. If you use a proprietary program or somebody else's web server, you're defenceless. You're putty in the hands of whoever developed that software."

Yes, that's total guff from Stallman. For a non-programmer Linux is as closed-source as Windows. The fact that the source is available is irrelevant to the vast majority of users.

He's right. I really should convert The Code Project into a desk-based application and make it open source because it would be so much better, and think of the joy of never having to read another badly submitted article ever again? And no trolls! Think about it!

                cheers, Chris Maunder

Yeah... Now I only need to get the $10.000.000 that I've been hiding in my socks to pay for hardware, electricity, bandwidth and salaries for my 50 sysadmins & support people to run my BigSite 2.0. I could use Amazon Web Services and some Content Delivery Networks for just 0.1% of that sum, but what about my files? What if Amazon lies in the agreement I have with them? What about my files, they are protected by two random keys only and all I have is my private key here... I wonder what kind of computing he meant... Of course I would use my own computer, but there's a certain limit to what it can do in a short amount of time! X| I'm using Amazon S3 as my backup network drive, I have uploaded over 2GB of data this month and the cost is below $2. :P
