Create you own mini project to spend your time on. Choose something that you will learn from and may be useful in the future. Write a program in a language you've never used before. Use a feature of the .net framework you've never used before. Learn about Linq, or the entity framework, or wcf, wpf, wf, infocard, or install Linux and port an app to mono, join an open source project and help them, write a program directly in IL and see if you can make it better/smaller/faster than a c# equivalent. Read a book you haven't read, Find something to do with your spare time that will make you a better programmer in the future. If your a web programmer, write a desktop app. If your a app programmer, write a web app. Or - just kick back, and relax for a bit. We all need downtime now and again.

You love work, but you're incapable of finding a technology you could learn about and spend a day delving into it ?

Maybe they should train you so you can have work to do all the time rather than having days with nothing to do... Maybe you could ask to be activly involved in this new project, just as a trainee? James

I know the feeling one of my first jobs I had I spend 3 weeks doing just that, nothing. I quit after that and went to another job. The biggest problem I had then was that I couldn't even surf the internet so no way for me to keep me busy. But you can so read, surf, learn or count the minutes as they pass by (like I had to do)

Do you get paid on bench? Personally, I refuse to work for any company with such a policy as bench without pay. Some of the large consulting companies in the States not only pay you only when you are on-site with a client but make you get your next client too!
