I've noticed it has problems with file listings that are VERY VERY long. But other than that, it's the best. At least, best of the free.

I've used WS_FTP (ipswitch.com) for years. It did what I needed it to.

I second/third Filezilla (works on Mac OS now too.) I tried FireFTP awhile back. It seemed fine but I found having it part of Firefox just caused problems (accidental closing of tabs, other websites crashing Firefox and killing FireFTP and Firefox has never been fast to load so when I wanted to quickly FTP something it was quicker to fire up Filezilla.)

        cheers, Paul M. Watson.

I use the free ftp client from www.coffeecup.com[^]. It does just fine for my needs.

I used to use SmartFTP but they recently went shareware instead of freeware. It is still probably the best FTP client on the market if you don't mind payin a few bucks for it. Before that I used CuteFTP but abandoned it after finding SmartFTP and forgot about it when I was searching for a replacment the other day. I now use Filezilla which seems very good except I don't really like the way the queue works when you add directories (it searches each directory when adding and adds each file instead of just saying "when you want to transfer the queue, I'll grab every file that is there at the time"). It took me almost as much time to create my file queue as it did to actually transfer the files when I copied my website (which includes a phpbb install) to my local harddrive last weekend.

The 'ftp' command-line one that comes with Windows, OS X and *nix? Well, that's the one I use, anyway.

Thanks, but I've just found FireFTP, which is a Firefox add-on. It seems pretty OK so far, but I've downloaded filezilla should I find prolems.

I use FireFTP too. Does the job. I also use FTP Explorer 1.0 (supplied free by my ISP years ago). Pretty old now but also does the job.

I've been using WinSCP for ftp and sftp for a long time. Great client. Flash FXP would be my favorite commercial client.

Filezilla FTW - I just used it over the weekend to transfer close to 500 GB (yes, that is Gigabytes) from a customer site to our data center, several hundred thousand files in all. Great performance, very stable (had it up all weekend without any interruptions) and fast fast fast! I only wish it would allow more than 10 connections to the server because I filled all ten pretty quickly. I did get around the 10 connections limit by running multiple copies, but that's just not the same. I did notice that it couldn't transfer files when the full pathname of the file gets much above 200 characters, but a structure that long has other problems as well.

FireFTP is the client I prefer if I have Firefox; Filezilla is great if I don't. Portable Filezilla can be preconfigured and emailed to other users, or carried on a USB stick. Filezilla Server is very good also.
