would like do me a favor. from my local newspaper, there is a report: Aug 5th,a stranger bird stopped flying because of wound and landed at a farmer's courtyard. the kind farmer(who lives not far from where i live)raised it and fed it carefully. but he did not know where it is from. at the bird's claw, there is a metal ring,on it lettered three lines: CALL:1-800-327-BAND 102500543 LAUREL MD 20708 U.S.A the journalist asks for clues.so any guys have something to say? :) this is my signature for forums quoted from shog*9: I can't help but feel, somewhere deep within that withered, bitter, scheming person, there is a small child, frightened, looking a way out.

I called 800-327-BAND and they are closed for the day. I'll try tomorrow. Where was the bird found? (Country, city, etc...) Rick

Many groups tracks endangered species, and migratory waterfowl as well. They do this by tagging the birds and releasing them again with a band such as you describe to enable them to keep track of them. The first line is a phone number to call to report the bird being found. The second is a unique identifier, and the third is likely the location where it was originally banded. It's possible that a call to the Laurel, Maryland postmaster might reveal the organization that placed the tag. "Knock, knock." "Who's there?" "Recursion." "Recursion who?" "Knock, knock..."

THE NORTH AMERICAN BIRD BANDING PROGRAM[^] This is the real site. They would love to know about the bird. The second number is the ID number for the band. The last is the address of the project. Tim Smith "Programmers are always surrounded by complexity; we can not avoid it... CHINA? The bird ended up in CHINA? I am sure they would LOVE to hear about where this bird was found if it actually went that far. (Assuming it was a US banded bird. The US banding program might extend to many countries.) Tim Smith "Programmers are always surrounded by complexity; we can not avoid it... Thanks Tim, I have visited the website and reported the banded bird to the program. But i did not find anything in the website about how to deal with the bird or what should we do to the bird. this is my signature for forums quoted from shog*9: I can't help but feel, somewhere deep within that withered, bitter, scheming person, there is a small child, frightened, looking a way out.

It's a wild animal, so you're not expected to do anything with it (unless you suspect it's unwell, or in danger in the environment you found it in) The only reason for banding is to be able to track where the birds migrate to - It's impressive how far they can fly, isn't it! -- Help me! I'm turning into a grapefruit!
