How long does it take you to setup a dev machine?
-
Install Windows, Office, Patches, etc. Personalize OS Install compilers VC6/VC7 and configure Install dev tools TextPad, SecureCRT, etc. etc. (tons of these) Copy over all settings for each of the above apps (everyone is different of course) Setup ODBC sources (lots of these) Install dev projects etc, etc. etc. etc..... It takes me at least 3 days and I'm still not finished. :( Todd Smith

Well, the last couple of times i've traded an old PC for a new one i've just taken the second HD containing all my source, VMs, and utility programs from one to the next. That saved a lot of time. Still, there was probably at least a day of work involved each time patching up Windows, installing VS, VS.NET, VB, SciTE, gobs of ODBC sources ( X| soon you will all die... soon...), misc app settings, etc. And of course, no matter how done i think i am, i'll be finding little things like context menu extensions (CopyPath, WinZip) missing for days or weeks afterwards.

One thing is for sure ... this time is only increasing On my last few setups .. I couldn't even be bothered with the drama of installing Office. I imagine in a couple of years ... it could be 50 hrs work on a typical setup. Regardz Colin J Davies

You are the intrepid one, always willing to leap into the fray! A serious character flaw, I might add, but entertaining. Said by Roger Wright about me.

It takes around a day for me, but that's probably because I don't have much to set up. Most of the time, I do work with default settings, so when I have to reformat and reinstall, I am back on my feet pretty quickly. I also store data in a couple well-defined points, so backing up means just copying those directories somewhere and rummaging through "Documents and Settings" and "Program Files" for leftover stuff. It's even easier with my new hard drive because I made a data partition and used the junction tool at SysInternals to make links from my main partition to directories on the data partition :-D

One of the things I learned the hard way is to not (too much) reconfigure software. If I am used to work with the default configuration, when I need to rebuild the machine it will be a matter of hours, not days. Other reason for this was that I worked for a long time as a technical leader for my staff and seating in front of a different machine every time can be a pain, if you don't work with the default configuration. But when I used to reconfigure everything in every application, I always did a backup of my app settings, just to speed up things when reinstalling. Concussus surgo. When struck I rise.

My way: Format the HD Install OS Patch OS Create users Install major apps : Office, VS.net Install necessary small apps -- Get to work -- later Install other junk that is "necessary" Customize UI, options ...
