My boss has told me to find a protector for our group so we don't have to keep running around looking for a projector to borrow whenever we want to do a meeting. Does anybody have any good suggestions on what to look for? We'll mostly use it for throwing up PowerPoint presentations, but we also sometimes need to throw up other applications or data and it's nice if it's a least somewhat readable. I can probably convince my boss to buy something fairly solidly mid-range, so we don't need the cheapest available. Any suggestions or experiences that anyone cares to share? Thanks!

For PowerPoint presentations I suggest a projector that emits no light whatsoever and has all audio disabled. That way people can just talk about the subject and not suffer fading venetian blinds and "amusing" popups.

I still remember having to write your own code in FORTRAN rather than be a cut and paste merchant being pampered by colour coded Intellisense - ahh proper programming - those were the days :)

Here are two things that should be used in the same sentence. On a more serious note, I can't make any recommendation for projectors, but I'm sure someone will soon.

We have a lot of Dell projectors at our office, and I have absolutely no complaints about them. In particular, our group uses: http://www1.ca.dell.com/content/products/productdetails.aspx/proj_2400mp?c=ca&cs=calca1&l=en&s=biz[^]

Check for projector range, and where you will put it. Short range projectors are best mounted overhead, as they can compensate only so much trapezoid distortion, but they are more versatile.. Check price for replacement lamp. They are the most sensitive part. It's not much of a problem if it's mounted "out of reach" and never moved - but when it's moved around (say, some group borrowing it for their meeting...), life span is limited. (It's not to bad, but you need to be careful.) Resolution - best would be to match the native resolution of the PC it's connected to. 1024x768 probably saves you money, but isn't really a lot anymore. However, with non-4:3-laptop displays being the norm, this is often futile. Make sure that you check it "works well with" all computers that you want to use it on as soon as you get it. Brightness - more is better :) On what surface will you be thrweing the image? With a weaker one, you definitely need a dedicated projection screen

It's not just a case of buying replacements when they blow, but if they fail there's a significant chance that they'll bust other stuff and brick the projector, so you should be swapping bulbs on the official preventative maintenance schedule not waiting until the die.

Thanks!

How large an image do you need? The bigger the image, the brighter the projector needs to be, especially if you keep the lights on or have windows in the room. Ymight consider a flat panel display instead of a projector, if you can accept a smaller, but brighter image. Will you be using the projector for customer meetings? If so, you may need a spare bulb or even a backup projector so you can do a quick change.

We actually have a big flat screen in our lab, but obviously it's not real portable. We need something we can take into any meeting room (a few of our rooms have fixed projectors, most of them don't). We probably won't take it out of the building (which means we almost certainly will at some point).

Thanks!

What I would consider: - Maximum power (lumen). => it helps to see something even with some curtains off. - Expected life of the light bulb and it's cost. => great to know that the bulbs will last for some time and that they will cost money at the end... - DLP => it was the latest technology the last time I saw it... - Possibilities to place it into the table, upside down, ... Some day you'll need to take it away and place it in a strange place... - Multiple connectors / connections allowed. => Who knows what you will need in a possible future. - The resolution. => Of course it is very important, depending on the kind of apps you'll use it will define a lot which kind of projector you will need... XGA seem to be the more common... - The noise level. => the light bulbs are very hot and some air systems blow in order to refrigerate them... - Being able to make all the regulations on the remote is great, when someone has cleaned the room and has moved the optical regulations it is embarrassing to have to change it manually standing on a chair... By now I've been able to test 3 ACER ones... the first one was stolen from our company... the second one was broken and after 6 months of being at the ACER technical service it returned with the same error... Meanwhile the police recovered our first projector... After a while the first and the second one were stolen again... And now we have another ACER projector... It is great as it was the most powerful one that our vendor had, but... the technical support dept. was horrible... I think it was one of the cheapest ones... Hope that helps...

A very interesting neo-logism, Leppie. Original ? It seems to me that "powerpointlessness" could be used ambiguosly to refer to a person who was able to present their ideas clearly without the typical slide-show crutch, or, on the other hand, to be used as a form of denigration for someone whose use of the slide-show camouflages ignorance and bullshit with eye-candy and visual structure. And there could be a sarcastic use of the word also; to wit : "he seems to be an epitome of powerpointlessness, but, really, he's still just another glib bullet-point head." Congrats on IronScheme release : is BronzeScheme in the smelter ? best, Bill
