Never said they weren't. Yet it is clearly an issue within the party. Otherwise Colin Powell would not have felt it necessary to say

I'm also troubled by, not what Senator McCain says, but what members of the party say. And it is permitted to be said such things as, "Well, you know that Mr. Obama is a Muslim." Well, the correct answer is, he is not a Muslim; he's a Christian. He's always been a Christian. But the really right answer is, "What if he is?" Is there something wrong with being a Muslim in this country? The answer's no, that's not America. Is there something wrong with some seven-year-old Muslim-American kid believing that he or she could be president? Yet, I have heard senior members of my own party drop the suggestion, "He's a Muslim and he might be associated [with] terrorists." This is not the way we should be doing it in America. I feel strongly about this particular point because of a picture I saw in a magazine. It was a photo essay about troops who are serving in Iraq and Afghanistan. And one picture at the tail end of this photo essay was of a mother in Arlington Cemetery, and she had her head on the headstone of her son's grave. And as the picture focused in, you could see the writing on the headstone. And it gave his awards—Purple Heart, Bronze Star—showed that he died in Iraq, gave his date of birth, date of death. He was 20 years old. And then, at the very top of the headstone, it didn't have a Christian cross, it didn't have the Star of David, it had crescent and a star of the Islamic faith. And his name was Kareem Rashad Sultan Khan, and he was an American. He was born in New Jersey. He was 14 years old at the time of 9/11, and he waited until he can go serve his country, and he gave his life. Now, we have got to stop polarizing ourself in this way. And John McCain is as nondiscriminatory as anyone I know. But I'm troubled about the fact that, within the party, we have these kinds of expressions.

Apparently not. Obama got the nomination. I see that you are not disputing that anti-muslim bigotry is a problem within the Repbublican party.

I suspect there is some anti-muslim bigotry within the Republican party, but I refuse to paint the entire party with that brush. Is that what you are attempting to do? I see that you are not disputing that the Democrat's are playing the race card.

Hey, Oak, the Democrats and other blacks would refer to him as an "Uncle Tom" since he was a (expletive) Republican. How quickly they forget that the Democrats are the party of bigotry (from 2 centuries ago, too, Oilfactotum). I am so sick of blacks playing the race card, and generally of Democrats being the ones to play it. Talk about hypocrisy!

For a long time the Democrats have very successfully played on peoples ability to feel sorry for themselves. Which makes them appeal to minorities that feel (rightly so or not) that they've been mistreated or neglected. Obama does well partly because every speach includes "I know it's tough, people are hurting..." instead of "people want the crap taxed out of them, and if you're successful I'll really put the screws to you..." People all over the country sit up and say "yeah, it is tough, I am hurting, he really gets it", then they turn off their satellite dish big screen plasma TV, hop in one of their SUVs and leave their house to go out to eat.

You need to get out more, my friend. There are a whole bunch of people out there, some of them lilly-white, who are hurting. I am not saying that Obama has the answer to anyone's problems (or that McCain does) but I am quite sure that there are a lot of working poor that don't drive SUVs and don't have plasma TVs.

I just turned 63, and for as long as I can remember, people (the electorate) have been believing the crap that spews from the mouths of politicians. How people can't see that the pols are buying their votes with their (the people) money (taxes) to me is incredible. And 90% of the time, the pols don't make good on their promises, and never get called on it. We let these leaches take the money from the Social Security Trust Fund to put it in the General Fund and spend it buying more votes. And then we are astounded that Social Security is going broke and no one has the guts to even try and fix it. And Ted Kennedy, of all people, tries to be the "champion" of Social Security, even though he's never so much as paid a dime into SS!! Like every government worker, they are too good to have SS as a retirement vehicle! In short people have a memory span of about 30 seconds, and vote one of two ways --- popularity or with their wallets, based on what direction the economy has taken. I fear our nation cannot last much longer with trillions of debt piling up. Some day those IOUs are going to be coming due ...

maybe you should take a trip to the local food bank where the "poor" can get free foodstuff. Check out the parking lot and see what they're driving. And go inside and see what they're wearing, and tell me that all of them are "hurting". I have done so and not everyone I see is "hurting".

Are you suggesting it's not an issue within the country? Or the world? I see that you are not disputing that anti-muslim bigotry is a problem within the Democratic party. Or with the Independent party for that matter. Let's not make believe that Republicans have a monopoly on bigotry. Good Lord, if being blonde was somehow a bad thing you'd probably be pointing out statistics of Republican blondes. Keeping with the partisan schtick I see. You're really Bill Mahr, aren't you. You can tell me, I want tell anybody.

This is what you are whining about? Not that Obama is playing the race card, but that some pundit is? Now slate is the Democratic party? Sorry I'm not buying into Stan's(and now your) fantasy of a 'leftist' media as an organ of the Democratic party.

Then go ahead, I'm waiting with bated breathe. You posed the stupid question, as if it means something to admit that there is bigotry in the Republican party, as if there isn't in any other organization. Strawman indeed, I may have to start calling you that.

Sounds like blaiming McCain for what somebody in a crowd yells, huh.
