I'm going over to a mates place tomorrow who has cable internet connection. I had him download Windows 2000 SP3 and Symbols and just thought that the newest Platform SDK would be another good one to get. Problem is when I went to the site[^] it wanted me to install an ActiveX control before I could get to the download. Now I don't want my friend to install this ActiveX control as he is not a developer and I don't want to add erroneous shit to his machine. So my question is, is there anyway I can get the Full Platform SDK download without the ActiveX control? I only have Visual C++ 6, will this newest version of the Platform SDK work with it? If it won't, is there anywhere I can download the newest version from, that will work with Visual C++ 6? Probably there is no way to bypass installing the control, but that may not cause your friend any problems. ActiveX controls don't run on their own, after all, and since he's not a developer, it's unlikely that he'll be doing anything to invoke it in the future. Your best bet might be to order the CD - it's not all that costly. Just for you, though, I'll test it. I'm downloading the works, including optional bits. I'm running Win2K with VS6 installed, and even with a broadband connection, the site is predicting 3+ hours for the download. I'm going to bed while it downloads, and I'll let you know in the morning if it broke anything. If I don't post anything by this time tomorrow, don't install it!:-D Here goes.... "Knock, knock." "Who's there?" "Recursion." "Recursion who?" "Knock, knock..."

Just a quick update - the installation failed. The file Autorun.inf in the existing PSDK folder didn't have permissions set to allow the Admin to modify it. I corrected that and restarted the download. "Knock, knock." "Who's there?" "Recursion." "Recursion who?" "Knock, knock..." [EDIT] Another failure... This time it's whining about the whole Microsoft SDK folder, so I changed the permissions on that pesky bugger, too. And this is just to get the Common Setup files! Typical of everything I encounter from Microsoft:mad: I'm getting really pissed and drunk trying to make this pig work at all! I've already had all the wodgah and tonnyx I need for one night! The May 2002 SDK works fine with VC++6 as well as VS.NET, so no problems there. I had problems with the ActiveX control on the SDK site, in that it didn't install correctly for some reason - don't know why - and the page refused to load, as it couldn't instantiate the control. Managed to do a full-downlaod in the end, though! It was much easier when you could just go to the FTP site & download the lot from there. The site you gave is for the SDK update. Does this control just update your machine like the updates to IE? Now I have a MSDN subscription so I always go to the MSDN download and use the download control to copy the files to my local machine and then cut a CD.

I have read your next post before I answered this one. When you say you are downloading it, are you downloading the files to install at a later time or actually doing the install as an update of your current installation? As for buying the CD, last time I rang Microsoft Australia I couldn't find anyone that knew what I was talking about. In the end they said it wasn't available here in Australia as a seperate purchase. That was middle of last year. You've got to remember we live in the boondocks down here. Exactly 6 hours later, I'm back and taking nourishment (coffee), checking with great trepidation the state of my server. Lo and Behold! There's no BSOD, nary a mild warning displayed on the screen. Will wonders never cease? It's too early to tell whather it broke anything, but so far all looks normal. I haven't selected the Register with Visual Studio function yet, but a later poster said that it works fine, so I'm not terribly concerned. The first step installs the Windows Installer Control, which may be the one that's concerning you so much. It updated the version I already have without any problem. The second block was the Common Setup files, which are the ones that gave me minor fits early this morning. After a long night in the pool hall it was a challenge to read the tiny print in the error messages, but the amounted to a problem with permissions on the target folders and files. The process runs as an Admin, and the only permissions on the target were for domain users, limited to read only. I added Administrators with Full Control to the whole folder and the problem went away. Once the setup files were installed I went to bed, and everything ran to completion overnight without any problems. So, the problem remains - if you do the download on your friend's computer, how will you get it to yours? I was offerred no choice to download for later installation, so I think you're screwed. Have you checked the MSDN download site for a full download package, rather than an update? That area usually has an option for downloading huge zip files for later consumption. Another option would be to order the CD, but that might be a problem for export. The EULA that was displayed (and had to be accepted to continue) had a clause forbidding export to any country outside of the US and Canada. Ridiculous - last time I checked we were still allies! Or did something change recently and I failed to notice? Oh well, that was fun. If you can't get the CD shipped there, and if it's legal for me to do so, you're welcome to have it shipped here, and I'll relay it to you. It's hard to imagine why we'd be restricted from exporting this stuff to you when we freely send stuff to Canada, well known gateway for terrorists that it is. :-D "Knock, knock." "Who's there?" "Recursion." "Recursion who?" "Knock, knock..."

Just use the Full Download link accessed from the blue bar across the top then burn it on a cd, worked for me. -- Andrew.

If that's the Download menu that has Install, Full Download and Another Option then it is still wanting to install an ActiveX control. If that will still allow me to get all the files down and burn them to a CD I will give it a go as that is what I want. I was planning on using a cross over cable or a JAZ disk to get the files. If I can't get a full download for later consumption then I am stuffed. I will look at the link you provided in your other post to see where I can get the CD from. Thanks for your efforts in working this all out for me. I'm off to search MSDN for a full download. Yeah that's the one. I did it a while back (not this psdk, the one before it methinks), and it seemed to work ok. It seems you have to install the ActiveX control just to download it though. I did the full download in 10mb pieces, or however large they are. -- Andrew.
