Question about file copying speed in Vista 32bits.

Hello all, I don't pretend to rant or to vent or to kill or to ... well better to leave it here... Each time I try to copy one file the computer slows down... if I copy that file from Vista to a XP computer it takes ages, and if I do it from any folder to any other folder in my own vista computer it is also very slow... The computer is a HP dc7700p, this means: I have a 4,7 in the system evaluation: Intel 6600 2.40 & 2.40, 2 GB of RAM and Vista 32. Does anybody know of a solution? something magic that would make that "OS" to copy a file a little bit faster? Thank you in advance... PS: I'm ready to fight if I start receiving "special" posts... :-D

AFAIK you can legally "downgrade" your vista license to XP...

Without local judicial medelling you only have downgrade rights from VBus/VUlt to XPpro. Home versions don't have downgrade rights.

A few years ago, we had that happen at the company I was at. Turned out a badly configured switch was forcing a portion of the network to 10Mbps.

Try TeraCopy[^] out, it doesn't work very well in lots of files but on huge files it's noticeably quicker. It does have issues though with UAC so whenever you want to paste into a directory that is tied down then you have to disable it (there's an option where it's disabled when the scroll lock is on).

:sigh: This is more or less that "kind" of answer... Yes... that would surely do the trick, but now I would like to be legal and also I would not like to spend money on an OS that surely will disappear... I'll think of it if the Vista thing don't get improved and the next windows is into the market, but not now...
Mac sale has been increasing continuously. The issue of Vista many experience is one of the reason. One behavior that I observed is that it takes a long time to expand a tree in the left pane of the windows expolorer. Clicking on a folder in the left pane to see its sub folders in the right panel is much faster than expanding the folder tree.

My guess would be either a failing harddrive or that it has gone into a wrong PIO/DMA state or that you don't have the proper driver. If you check in the device mananger under your IDE or SATA controller what does it say?

Our HP Procurve is not a managed one so it cannot be badly configured... But thank you for trying!

Try TeraCopy[^] out, it doesn't work very well in lots of files but on huge files it's noticeably quicker. It does have issues though with UAC so whenever you want to paste into a directory that is tied down then you have to disable it (there's an option where it's disabled when the scroll lock is on).

After trying almost all the possible solutions in the world :rolleyes: I've tried TERACOPY... Man, this works! At least the copy processes are fast again... THANK YOU! :thumbsup:

Word of advice. Turn on the feature which disables it when Scroll Lock is enabled, TeraCopy is horrendously slow on lots of files. If it's big files that you're transferring then it's great but lots of small ones and it takes an absolute age compared to Vista. Glad it's been of help though.
