I haven't installed a virus scanner or anti-spyware on my machines in years, use IE, and haven't been hit by that crap once in the last 15 years! Why?? Because I know how to get around the web safely. How do I know I've never been hit?? It's two weeks I have a nasty trojan which displays ads (adultfriendfinder dot com and others) on my screen through IE and I cannot get rid of it. I tried Avast, AdAware, Spybot S&D, Win Defender ... What else can I do?? None of these helps. :(
really simple - use System Restore (Start - Programs - Accessories - System Tools - System Restore). Not a lot of people know about it, but surprisingly for Windows, it works, and it's really useful. Go back to two weeks ago. Anything you installed within the last fortnight will be uninstalled, but usually it's a small price to pay.

assuming it was a recent infection, and not a recent "detection"

SmitFraudFix[^] has worked for me getting rid of adware hijackers from friends computers. You will still need to use Adaware, Spybot and an Antivirus program and maybe VundoFix[^]

Yeah see my reply above. AVG did it. Since now I use AVG instead of Avast.

Sad, sad little person...you're using FF (as posted below) and it's IE's fault??? Maybe the search for porn (child/animal/gay or whatever your pleasure) or other highly questionable endevors could be the real issue?

I would usually not say much to idiots jerks dumbasshats people like this, but like you, it just struck a note...NOW, he's probaly not any of those types I just mentioned, but I'm not judging the person as much as the post itself. He's probably a Happy, Happy Big Person in real life. I'm also aware of my judgemental fault, as I am aware of other people being the same here, but thanks for pointing that out to me. I tend to refrain from displaying my judgemental side, but on occasion I just can't help it.

Agreed, his blaming the program is about as responsible as driving into on coming traffic, having a wreck and then blaming the driver of the car you collided with. It IS quite irritating to see those types of posts. Pointing that out in a constructive way may have a more positive impact than expressing your ire. Then again, probably not since nothing is his fault where surfing the web is concerned. Perhaps it wasn't his surfing habits that infected him, especially if it's a home computer shared by children and/or significant others. Certainly if his computer had been firewalled to the point that there were actual bricks around it and his browser input so heavily encrypted that even Deep Blue couldn't decipher it - maybe he wouldn't have contracted malware in the form of pr0n ads. But because IE is so poorly coded how could anyone ever expect to be safe on the web? I can be very judgemental in ways I probably should not, but it always bother me to see it expressed among peers - no matter what the level of peerage. Having been (and still am) the subject of seemingly similar harshness, I try to refrain from casting stones. I guess I just stick to the rule "if you don't have anything good to say..." For who knows, anger and frustration can make us type lots of things that we know not to be true, or if we took a logical moment to think about it would never say in print much less in person - and this person could have been just so.
