Every fourth President died in office either through Assassination or natural causes. The trend was broken by Ronnie Reagen, although he did have an assassination attempt. (He was never the same after it, the Alzheimers kicked in). Obama or McCain will be the 44th! Wanna place your bets ladies and gentlemen?

I've been told you can get 55 -1 that Obama won't be the next president... worth a punt don't you think.

Given that Mr O is going to win (does anyone seriously think otherwise? Come on, get real...) I have to say, I hope his security is better thanb ol' Abe's was... have to give the man top marks for bravery; there sure are going to be plenty of people gunning for him - some of them literally...

I may be mistaken, but I don't think "blacks" got the right to vote until 1870. Lincoln was a Republican

I didn't indicate he wasn't a republican, merely an Illinois Senator.

Probably, but it was a JOKE, (See Icon) If I have to explain it, it probably wasn't funny, and I apologise.

Didn't say you did...just throwing out random facts.

I disagree, too many of the really dangerous people, like those who might still have control of 'sections of the intelligence services' although out of office, have switched sides in the last few days and weeks. It's not that there aren't dangerous people left who might resort to assasination it's just that they're highly unlikely to act because they wouldn't get away with it as they did with JFK or with shooting Reagan. They're too afraid of one another right now and like rats looking for a raft many are coming out for Obama, it being more important in their twisted minds to back a winner than to have any principles or integrity.

It was Lincoln's assassination that triggered the creation of the Secret Service. So, we'll see... It usually is the ideologue presidents that people try hardest to assassinate, and that probably correlates directly to the every-4th-president factoid - every 4th president is, give or take, a generation, and you usually only produce an ideologue political leader once a generation. In other words.. Obama is probably going to get alot of attempts, assuming he wins, and I'd expect McCain's attempt count to be higher than normal too. Here's hoping neither comes to harm. That's the last thing we need.. politics in America has become alot more fragile than people think.

Not true. The curse was being elected in a year with 2 zeros. Bush is the current cursee, and unless something happens in the next few months will continue to break the death curse. #36 was LBJ, JFK #35 was assasinated. JFK was elected in 1960. #32 was FDR, he lost with either system. #28 Was Wodrow Wilson. He lived, #29 Harding elected 1920 died of a heart attack. #24 was Grover Cleveland, he lived. #25 William McKinley was elected in1900 and was assassinated. I could go on...

Actually it was the massive amount of counterfeiting that triggered the creation of the Secret Service, which is why they've been part of the Treasury Department up until they got absorbed by Homeland Security a few years ago. They weren't commissioned to protect the President until McKinley was assassinated about 40 years later.

Imagine that you are hired to build a bridge over a river which gets slightly wider every day; sometimes it shrinks but nobody can predict when. Your client provides no concrete or steel, only timber and cut stone (but they won't tell you what kind). The coefficient of gravity changes randomly from hour to hour, as does the viscosity of air. Your only tools are a hacksaw, a chainsaw, a rubber mallet, and a length of rope. Welcome to my world. -Me explaining my job to an engineer
