Yes that's a good way to learn. I learned a lot from the Zen Garden site and the Zen Garden book. But a good reference is http://www.amazon.com/CSS-Definitive-Guide-Eric-Meyer/dp/0596527330/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1226004763&sr=8-1[^]. Though it does not cover CSS3.

I think of ZenGarden as a fantastic showcase for what CSS is capable of. For practical information, I generally consult A List Apart or just type what I need to do into a search engine. Granted, I haven't consulted A List Apart in quite some time. I think they locked down their resources into a subscription model now...

i find anotehr good source is the sitepoint website and related book -- the site is http://reference.sitepoint.com/css[^] while their reference book is at http://www.sitepoint.com/books/cssref1/[^]

I've used Sitepoint, and have more than one of their books, but w3schools.org is still the handiest for a quick check of how something should be coded, though they do not exercise every possible capability.
