Yeah, I'm soooo happy!!! you don't know how happy I am ... :| dropped my external HD on the floor and it cannot be read any more; the drive is not even recognized by the USB port (PC and Mac), it's a LaCie drive, don't know if I can remove the drive itself from the box and try to hook it up another way to a PC. Lost about 2, 3 months of photos (some of them are on flickr, some on my PC's HD) Don't know about the amount of music I lost; my backup HD is from last january (or something like that); all the most recent music I bought is on my iPod (I need to backup that right now!!) Yep, that's life; and that's me buying a new HD for backups! M.

You should definitely try taking it apart and connecting separately. That worked for me two times already with my Western Digital MyBook. There is probably going to be an old ATA drive inside. However, story like this always makes me go and make a new backup of everything. But I feel you pain. I've been there.

You've been wanting to upgrade, haven't you? Now's your chance! :-D I just got a 1 TB MyBook a few weeks ago and I love it. It's so cute sitting there on my desk I just want to slap a title label on its spine and tuck it away on the shelf with the 36 sq ft of programming books I haven't yet thrown away. Seriously, though, try cracking the case and accessing the goodies inside; you just might be able to get your pics back. But in the meantime, use this as an excuse to get a new one. :-D

I'm thinking of using large usb-sticks for backup, at least they don't break so easy and there's no fuss with cables... all my data and music combined is about 4 Gb or so. So an 8 Gb stick would do it... 32 or 64 Gb would be nicer though! Also I always carry one backup with me on the micro-sd card in my phone (in case house catches fire or something).

Good luck. You'll need something other than iTunes to recover your music. I had a hard drive crash a few months ago, and there were several purchases on my iPod that it had the only copy. iTunes will not recover non-iTunes purchased music from an iPod under any circumstances whatsoever. There is a "retrieve purchases from iPod" menu option just for this purpose. It only works for music purchased through iTunes. I buy music from several sources, because iTunes is hardly comprehensive. All of my music that I did not obtain through iTunes now only exists on this iPod, and is unrecoverable.

On Mac, there's a utility called "Music Rescue" which seems to work very well; it shows the whole collection in the "itunes" fashion. I tried the demo a few weeks ago when I deleted a track by mistake, bought the full product ($20) so I can retreive every thing. Most of my tracks are legit MP3 bought from sites like beatport, kompakt-mp3, ...

All data you want should be kept in at least two places. If you're not keeping originals on your PC (eg historical snapshots) you should be backing it up twice.

Check out SharePod[^]. It allows you to copy any track from iPod to PC and PC to iPod. It covers pretty much every iPod model in existence and is continually updated for new models. I've use it to recover everything after a Windows re-install. :) Flynn

I use a program called Floola to back up my ipod music - it's just an alternative to sharepod. http://www.floola.com/modules/wiwimod/index.php?page=download[^]

I bought the same 1TB WD MyBook external storage, worked for several months as a charm. Suddenly started corrupting the MFT continuously. The problem occurred twice. Lost a lot of files. I don't trust it anymore, got a new Maxtor TB drive. First impression - the Maxtor drive seems to work a little bit faster (even though they should be equally fast). It comes NTFS formatted.
