64bit vista and windows update (not related)

but i thought i'd save myself posting 2 threads... so i have 4gb RAM on the way and i have a core 2 duo laptop running 32bit vista ... seems to me that switching to 64bit would make sense with the extra memory ... so has anybody had any issues with 64bit vista these days? drivers? common software that doesn't work? other issues i don't know about? next point... has anybody been having issues with windows update lately? i keep getting some bizarre error after it is "check for latest updates for my computer" for a while ... the "help" links tell me to check my internet connection (uh huh) and to make sure windows update is a trusted site ... but when i try to add it as a trusted site it tells me i can't as only https sites can be trusted *sigh* anybody got any clues there would be a great help :)

A) 2 of my roommates use 64bit vista with no issues at all. The only difference is they have Core 2 Quad instead of Duo. I'm passing on Vista, I'll get Windows 7 instead. B) No problems here.

I've had much better luck with Vista64 then with 32 bit. You don't mind the weird behavior as much when things aren't excruciatingly slow.

Hi Lauren. I'm using Vista64 and all software is working fine. No problems with drivers. I had an issue with windows update and found a solutions that works. It seems to be a problem with Automatic Updates Go to this site and try the little program they have. I ran it and the problem got fixed. http://www.codeplex.com/aureset[^]

None at all, never had any issue with it. The only thing that was a bit unhappy was my wireless card but that's eventually had a proper driver written for it (thus not the problem of Windows) and it's working fine. The only issues I've had with software is installers refusing point-blank to install because they don't recognise it's a 32-bit machine. The ironic thing is if you copy the files from a 32-bit machine (of XP) and copy a couple of registry keys everything works flawlessly :doh:.

I've had almost any issue with Vista itself, but I can confirm that x64 is faster and more reliable than x86, at least in my experience. There are still a few missing drivers, but only for some odd consumer-grade devices (Pinnacle products, for example, but x64 drivers are currently in development).

I bought a HP Pavilion that came configured with 64bit Vista, wiped the drive and installed Vista Ultimate (64 bit). I was pleased how HP had both 32bit and 64bit drivers on their website for all the hardware on the laptop. So I had a good experience. As for performance, it seems quite snappy. One annoying thing is that edit and continue during debugging doesn't work with 64bit .NET apps. Though I haven't researched the issue.

If you have any 16-bit Windows or DOS applications (including DPMI), you'll have to run them in a virtual machine running a 32-bit OS. The Virtual 8086 processor mode is not present in 64-bit long mode i.e. when running a 64-bit OS. Some old installers for 32-bit programs were written as 16-bit applications so they could spit out a meaningful error message on 16-bit Windows. 64-bit Windows editions are meant to detect these installer stubs, and run a 32-bit version instead, but only a few stubs are detected (basically some versions of InstallShield and Wise). On the whole, though, I'm finding it fine - I run Windows Vista Business x64 at home on a Dell Latitude D820 with 2GB RAM.

I'm in the process of switching to V64 with my new build machine. The only compatability I've found is with old (2005/6 era) DVD/TVTuner software. I don't expect this will be a problem since vista has players built in, but haven't moved the tuner card over yet to test. I'm waiting until I can get a waterblock and nail down my OC level before making it my primary machine. One tip I got from a friend lastnight. Run MS config, goto the boot tab and advanced options (instructions from memory). IT defaults to booting single core but you can change it to use all of them.

I have been running Vista 64 since the last beta versin without any problems. Seems it found most of my hardware drivers and only had to wait for Wacom to release their final 64 drivers (Grphire mouse/pen pad). All works great here. As a note on Vista 64, if you switch, there are two versions of IE, there is the 32 bit and 64 bit versions. The 64 bit version does not run plugins such as Flash but it loads up very quickly and the render is faster than the 32 bit version. On my system there are: 64-bit "C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe" 32-Bit "C:\Program Files (x86)\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe" I use to use Firefox before Vista and then switched back because the 64 bit version did not allow the plugins (keeping my system a bit safer) and the 64 bit version worked so quickly.
