He maybe just wants to appear enigmaic and mysterious? Or of course, it could be that he couldn't pay his broadband bill!

If he was in South Africa, I could possibly believe you :)

Attention. (I have little opinion either way about Martin but this "This is my final post here" messages are common on web forums, blogs, IRC etc. It is always an attention thing. They often return. Normally happens after an argument. I've done it. It doesn't last. These days I just stop posting if I am leaving. I am not important enough to announce my last post.)

      cheers, Paul M. Watson.

I dont think Martin is like that. Perhaps he was offended by some recent behavior on CP? Perhaps he is sick and dying? Let's rather not assume (unless someone can come up with a viable and logical suggestion) :)

Does anyone have an inkling as to what the veracious and facetious Mr. Martin Hughes is up to with that cryptic, departing sounding shot he posted the other day?[1] I'm genuinely wondering as to what he's up to and if he's indeed leaving. If he is leaving the ultimate question would be why? I'll certainly miss his quips and anecdotes if it turned out that he left. [1] Clickety[^]

Whole point of this post is to assume. I am assuming it is the often observed behavior of a million forum-leavers. If you are dying, offended, sick or disgruntled then there is little point to posting a leaving message other than attention. Just leave. And then you can come back when you are alive, pleased, well and happy again. Yo-yo forum users are common enough.

            cheers, Paul M. Watson.

Excellent point. My take on it is that he's checking regularly to see what we're saying about him. Sort of like faking your death so you can attend your own funeral. (Incognito of course.)

Assuming that the thickies even get that they're being ripped. The dear departed Mr. Hughes was certainly clever enough to know that. I don't recall JSOP every doing something to Mr. H. however.

I took it to mean he got a contract job in a country that does not have wide band... Could also mean marriage and honeymoon. If he is already married then in could be and indication he is contemplating suicide. It could also mean he has a project that involves Unix and does not know how to setup networking.

He retired as far as I recall. Also wasn't he thinking of buying an apple orchard at one point? Perhaps he's sitting in his orchard enjoying a nice bottle of scrumpie. :) You youngsters might not get it but if one of us oldtimers ever retired I'm guessing the last thing we would want to talk about would be programming, particularly if we went into a hobby career of some kind. If I retired from programming I'd probably be all over the Bamboo growing forums and the amateur chef forums much to the relief of the CP members. ;)

I have no idea, also as a relative newbie I do/did not know the esteemed Mr. Martin well enough to decide if it is the real reason but a short while ago he appeared to get really, and I do mean REALLY, ticked off because no one went to his Birthday Party. Could that be the cause?

I have no idea, also as a relative newbie I do/did not know the esteemed Mr. Martin well enough to decide if it is the real reason but a short while ago he appeared to get really, and I do mean REALLY, ticked off because no one went to his Birthday Party. Could that be the cause?

He retired as far as I recall. Also wasn't he thinking of buying an apple orchard at one point? Perhaps he's sitting in his orchard enjoying a nice bottle of scrumpie. :) You youngsters might not get it but if one of us oldtimers ever retired I'm guessing the last thing we would want to talk about would be programming, particularly if we went into a hobby career of some kind. If I retired from programming I'd probably be all over the Bamboo growing forums and the amateur chef forums much to the relief of the CP members. ;)

One of our super senior programmers/managers accumulated 2 months vacation. Often people would over hear him say on his way to lunch...'I don't need this sh*t'. He started his vacation. On the last day of his vacation he contacted his management and said today he is starting his new career as a tennis instructor in Ocean City (he moved during his vacation) That was 5 years ago... no one has heard from him since.

That was Michael Martin, and his birthday bash was in Australia. Martin Hughes is a brit, and if there'd been a birthday party with booze in the offing I'd have been all over him like Britney Spears in a talent giveaway.

Thanks for that. As I said I am newish here, got confused by the Martin name. I am very very old as well and easily confused.
