A friend is going on a trip, and was asking about an mp3 player to bring. I suggested for an avid music player like her, an ipod would be the thing. Video is secondary. Upon seeing the selection, she ooohed at the Touch, so I helped her examine the specs and compared it to the others. (I'm an Archos owner, focusing on recording tv, so naturally avoided this until now). Now, the evil, cute thing is calling to me.:~ I want the 32GB model, but don't want to be trapped by iTunes. Anyone have words of condemnation and caution to hold me off?

I found out that I really don't use iTunes much. I don't listen music on my computer, either at home or at work; only with my iPod. So I mainly use iTunes to manage the music I own, add new music (as 95% mp3, and 5% iTunes bought songs) once in a while, and sync my iPod. So that's about once a week, I fire up iTunes, import things up (from other commercial mp3 sources) and sync up.

I have a creative MP3 player, its cheaper, works just as good, has an SD card expansion slot, and iTunes doesn't take over my computer.

My current favourite word is: Nipple!

There's an SDK? I thought Apple only let certain apps on.

Have you actually used the slot? I ask because shortly after they first started selling SD equipped players there were customer complaints over the total lack of integration of the SD with the rest of the system. ie could only play single songs/videos/pictures, no play lists, no queues, no etc. and the response from creative was "It's not a bug, it's working as designed."

Yep, there's an SDK, you can even talk about it now! (ask Christian!). The AppStore is only for deployment beyond your dev work station and the single phone you hook up to that workstation, and after looking into it a bit, most of the mobile device makers have the same deal as AppStore, so it's not as onerous as people make out to be. So if you just want to fool around with mobile dev and run stuff on your ipod touch, you're good to go (assuming of course you have OSX).

I have used it actually. I keep most of the music on the player, and use the card for videos n' stuff. I also keep some other music on there too (and it will play more that one song at a time)

Well that's an improvement at least, but how far does it go. Ideal case would be treating the SD card exactly like the internal memory and integrating their content. Good enough (tm) would be treating it identically but separately from the internal memory ie full playlist, etc support for files on the SD card but not being able to create mixed playlists with both internal and SD files. I'd looked at Creative/Sandisk expandable players last spring, but didn't buy either because of the reports of intentionally crippled expansion slots and the Sandisk's horrible bass quality. The 16GB ones aren't quite big enough (I have 17gb of music atm), and the 32gb one was more than I was willing to spend ($300ish at the time).

Nothing to do with the topic but in my youth, as a motorcyclist it was much more common than now to do your own repairs. One of my local motorcycle spares stores had a female assistant and my friends and I used to go down there when we were bored, to ask if she had any solderless nipples. Of course we then had to buy some, so somewhere in the attic I've got about a hundred if anyone is stuck for one.

I thought video was secondary too... until I started going to the gym recently. A 45-60 minute TV show (Battlestar Galactica, Torchwood etc) on your iPod will *really* make that time on the elliptical fly by. Between BitTorrent (for TV shows) and Jodix Video Converter[^], I never run out of stuff to watch at the gym. I have the 5th Generation 80Gb iPod, and it's perfect for me. My wife's 8Gb Nano can't quite fit her entire music collection on it, which makes syncing a PITA. Yes, iTunes (and more importantly, QuickTime) sucks harder than any software I've ever had the misfortune to use, but you could always run it a VM or something... Actually, that's a damn good idea!

I have an 60GB iPod video and I have never used iTunes. There are plenty of other solutions, look into ephPod and media monkey. Unfortunately you do need iTunes for firmware updates. I've haven't done one in 3 years and mine hasnt busted so far.

I bought a 32GB Touch two months ago. It rocks! The sound is 1000% better than my previous device (Dell DJ) and the WiFi part is pretty nifty. I have 6 ripped DVDs on it but I'm waiting for my next plane ride to actually watch one all the way through. I used AnyDVD and Handbrake to RIP the DVDs to video. I use iTunes to manage my MP3s, videos and apps. It does fine. What problems do you expect?

Accept the Apple....you don't need iTunes[^]. I use iTunes...but then, I use OS X as well, so I'm totally submerged in the cult of Apple :-)

Errrr... according to their site AnaPod Explorer doesn't yet support the Touch.

                                          1. It has a touch screen that scratches easily. 1) You can't put it in your pocket 'cause your pocket lint might scratch it or change your song. 2) It is unnecessarily expensive because it has a touch screen. 3) Owning one means you have to grow a soul-patch, and wear a beret and turtleneck sweaters.

Don't blame me. I voted for Chuck Norris.
