Is It Possible For Fingers To Become Dyslexic?

I always seem to get "form" and "from" the wrong way round. Not that it helps you but I feel your pain!

Dude - so do I, all the time. That's the only one though.

I've noticed over the past several months that I frequently mistype simple words by reversing the order of two letters. 'Around' becomes 'aorund', 'type' turns out as 'tpye', etc. I have no trouble reading or doing math, never have, and I've never had any trouble typing on a keyboard. But lately it seems I'm spending more time fondling the backspace key than any other. It's getting annoying! Is there a cure? Finger transplant, maybe? Or should I just get a speech-to-text converter and be done with it?

I do that a lot when I try to type as fast as I can. But at normal speed (slow) I do that rarely.

Very likely. See, I'm a chemist by profession and after I spent some longer time out of the labs I noticed that I previously showed some signs of dyslexia (misspelled writing). Now I'm almost certain that it was from all the stuff that I inhaled through time - ammonia, chlorine, acids... you name it. (I don't drink alcohol or smoke so I enjoy things that would suffocate even a stronger person  )

I've had that happen before. Adjustments to coffee/Dr. Pepper/:beer: have been fixes for that :-D Adjusting up or down? It is something that needs to be fiddled with. Texting on the blackberry seems to work for some odd reason, too.

I find that it happens when I try to type with more than one finger; try typing with only one finger. The worst was a computer I used in the mid-'80s (an Amstrad 1512?), writing Pascal, SET would always come out SETF -- apparently having S, E, and T pressed at the same time yielded F as well, much like a TI calculator.

It seems to be to do with which hand is in charge of the next letter - when the same hand has to do two followed by a change of hands the instructions can get out of synch... Tie your left hand behind your back and the problem will be solved. (Other problems may appear however)

Gads, I hope not! My Nextel phone has that and it sucks. I can't think of a single word it ever got right, and since the damned things don't come with a manual it took days for me to find a way to shut it off.

I did a great one on my nokia some time ago - I was texting a prospective girlfriend and missed a letter. due to the predictive text, i told her that i wanted to put my vomit down her throat..... We never got it on.

I have been doing that alot, function regularly came out as fucntion. and there were one or 2 other words that i consistently swapped 2 letters in. I have noticed i don't do it any more since i moved back home from asterdam.

In short, yes. In Oliver Sacks popular science book "Musicophilia: Tales of Music and the Brain" he discusses musicians who suffer from various forms of dystonia - a confusion of notes and fingers. The proposed mechanism for this is that by playing scales over and over very quickly the parts of the brain dealing with each finger can occasionally become 'blurred' resulting in the wrong finger being used occasionally. He details several remedies for this that work for some. He also says that for some players what helps is to avoid music with many scales. To me it does not seem much of a leap to compare the learning of scales with learning complex series of keyboard sequences, so exactly the same things could be happening. I would recommend reading the above book, and perhaps also changing your password/editor etc. so that you have to learn some different sequences.

We all do it... its a fault of those that are considered to be 'experienced usre's' of computers (laptops of desktops). our fingers hit the button that we 'think' is the correct one and generally its the one underneath or alongside the one we meant to hit. (And I've been using comps for 37 years)

I've always been a slight bit dyslexic when it comes to typing — as evidenced tiem after time (that was on purpose, incidentally). I've also done 'teh' a lot, but I can manage to correct 'teh' and 'tiem' most of the time. Recently, however, I've noticed that my fingers have taken up spelling anything that has the letters 'ua' in that order as 'au' — rendering 'actually' as 'actaully'. It MIGHT just be my keyboard, but it's STILL annoying.

me too!! And I have been trying for years to stop it, unsuccessfully. Also the word "the" I always write as teh. This is not a problem since its always picked up by the (corrected) spell checker. As form and from are both words it can make thigns more difficult. I blame the good ol' days of having to define "form" tags for data to be submitted to teh server before the concept of page postbacks came into play with .NET.
