Muskegon

I am going to be in Muskegon Michigan, for a few days, on business. Are there any CPians from the area that can recommend any interesting things to see or good places to eat? I will be flying into Grand Rapids and driving; I assume the roads will be pretty clear this time of year.

Most of my family came from Muskegon, but it's been like 22+ years since I've been there. I remember riding around on a relative's boat in Lake Michigan, but it was summer time when I went.

You're on the other side of the state from me, so I can't recommend anything. But, don't count on the roads being clear. We're getting snow right now. That side of the state is look at around 7 inches by tomorrow afternoon.

Lucky you. Wish I had some around here. Last storm was just a tad bit too warm.

If the Village Inn Pizza Parlor (gMaps)[^] still exists down there check it out. I haven't been down state in a while, but they used to have very good pizza :D

Oh Boy! I have always been pretty good at driving in the snow, it's all the other idiots on the road that prove bothersome. Maybe they will stay out of my way. :-D

Thanks, I will have to check them out...they are not too far from the place[^] I will be visiting. I was in Wisconsin on business just recently and got to try Walleye for the first time at a local restaurant. I really liked it. I found out later that they are kin to the Sauger, what we call Jack Salmon where I am from...also good eating.

Coming from GR I assume you'll be taking 131, then 96 to Muskegon. Unless you're traveling rather early in the morning, the roads should be fine.

Walleye are like a great northern tradition around here. Living in Michigan's Upper Penninsula its funny to watch people go ga-ga fishing for something that fights like a log when they are hooked, but yeah they sure do taste good.

Which usually means it isn't good for you. I have been Sauger fishing before and it is usually an endurance test. It seems the best time to go is when it is near freezing and overcast, maybe with a little sleet mixed in. It's tolerable when they are biting, but no where near as fun as Striped Bass fishing in the summer.

It kind of looks like 96 runs right by the GR airport. We will be getting in around noon. I checked the forcast and they are predicting daily highs above freezing, so I should be OK. Oddly enough, they are predicting snow flurries here (700 miles south) tomorrow...no accumulations.

I spent my high school years in Grand Rapids then moved away to college and didn't go back for many years until recently. I really can't think of a lot to do there now. The area has changed a lot and is very depressed with the auto industry problems. There is the Gerald Ford Presidental Museum, a small zoo - John Ball Park, I believe - but that may be closed in the winter. There's Meijer Gardens on the east side of town. It's a botanical garden under a dome - very interesting to me. They have some special shows. Last year they had clear-wing butterflies which I had never seen anywhere else before. The west side of Michigan gets a lot of lake-effect snow. The winds coming in off Lake Michigan can bring in lots of snow in a short time. 96 between Grand Rapids and Muskegon is a good road and it's not that far - 45 minutes or so.
