What Do You Do At Work?

What do you do at work when you are currently not working on a project. I have found myself in that situation in the pass two days and have spent most of my time either read technical books or learning more VC++ (thanks go out to those in the VC++ forum who have helped me along the way :)). i used to either read books or (usually) try to code something which might be of use for the company, either for internal work or as a product idea/prototype. this had the advantage that i could get to code all the time, even in between projects, and twice i saw my idea develop into full projects. of course i was made a part of both these projects.

R&D mostly. Reading and Dinking around. :) Seriously though, I'll usually pick up a book and learn about some cool stuff. Or I'll donwload some new SDK and learn about something I think I might need in a future project. That way when that project comes up, I can look like I pick up stuff immediately.:-D Or I hang out on CP and read articles and play around with stuff. Like right now. I'm in between projects, but I'm researching stuff and playing with the IP*Works .NET[^] package and it's e-mailing capabilities. I'm also looking at the Intel Peer2Peer Toolkit[^] for the distributed computing stuff. Not on a project? What's that? Seriously, since my old company merged with my new employer over a year ago, I have barely had time to breath between projects. Mostly, I have 2-3 projects going on simulteanolsuly. Used to take time off hang with my family, travel, etc.

I agree. I personally revise the software development process, make some R&D (including book reading) and throw around enough vision & sometimes business cases documents to keep busy and create new projects. Sometimes this really kicks something. I'm rather surprised by even the question because I thought project managers and software engineers themselves were quite aware of how to do internal value projects or R&D in between commercial projects, making sure there is no wasted time (did I say I love my job the first 40 hours of the week?). There are jobs like that? I have work lined up for the next five years at a bare minimum. The project we're working on right now is scheduled to be done by the middle of October and I'm a little ahead if the power curve (by a week or so after today).
