Sounds like mismanagement, perhaps you like self-torture?

Yes, but then if you agree with it, then you must really like torture or what you do.

I like what I do, and I have pride in my product. It's "my child" so to speak. 10 14 years ago I was the only one doing it, now I have a team helping, but I am still the guy they turn to when there are problems because I am the only person who understands the big picture from customer to product. That is bad for the company, but no one else has the desire and the talent. However, you really expect me to have fewer hours with the command line kid around? ;) Seriously though, I like the job, hate the politics, love it when my software saves the country/soldier/site/company money/lives/time. I have done all at some time or another. It's good work, but no one else has ever been able to do what I do, and that is bad. I am still pushing for another hire. But first, new work requests. The next month will be searching for more money, then more hires. Deliver, get more budget, get more people, deliver, etc. Now the search is on for more money. :) So now we hit the demo trail.

I worked 55+ hours a week, another member of the team 80+, are you still sure? ;P When I get really down I try to remember my impact prediction routine from 10 years back. Holy forgotten years batman! I have been doing this for 14 (since '94)! :) Anyhow, I got bored during some delays on a mission and left the van to walk-about. I hated being cooped up in an 18 wheeler trailer with a dozen people for hours.... so I talked with the explosive recovery crew down the road, found out the dangers of their job, and what would help them. I improved accuracy of recovered ordinance by leaps and bounds, they invited me over for a tour of their office and threw me a surprise party as thanks -- it was their lives I was saving. I have never done anything quite as rewarding/important since, but having done that once. Nothing can compare. Bonuses come and go, token awards and plaques come and go, tours and speeches come and go, but that party was the nicest I have ever had in my life. :) If I ever get really depressed about work, I think of that. :)

Hey, I've felt your pain in the past. I do just fine getting through the crunch. A couple days later and the migraine truck runs over me, stops, backs up (running over me from that direction), and then repeats until I'm a gray messy paste in the road.

Wow, that sounds familiar. While the crunch is on, I'm pretty much good-to-go, and I'll work crazy hours. Then the crunch is over, and here comes the migraine train, with 6 engines and what seems like five miles of fully-loaded cars. Somehow, it doesn't seem fair.

Caffeine - it's what's for breakfast! (and lunch, and dinner, and...)

Fortunately, I've gotten good at recognizing when I've got one coming, and medicate early. That seems to help stave off the worst of it. I agree, it's not fair. At least for me it usually waits until the crisis is over, which is better than having it during.

Not to get into the politics, but this is a myth. All politicians rearrange spending. They make promises that you have to keep for them, you have to use these machines to do your work because this company made big donations. you get used to it. This is what you have to work with, make it work. Most of the test sites closed under the current administration, which isn't advertised, because money was spent to the big contractors, not the facilities or the soldiers. Again, you get used to it. Money will change, life will change, but it still goes on.

El, I'm glad to hear that you feel optimistic about things. I just tend to be a pessimist. I was basing my remarks on the claims of our President-Elect on how much he is going to curtail defense spending and slow down the acquisition of new weapons systems. I hope earnestly that you are right. Your remarks made me feel better, because I am sure that you know what you are talking about. Tom

Things will change, some things will be stupid, as always promises are made without any thought as to the outcome. I wouldn't call me an expert, I've only been through several administrations, but generally you just change directions. If you or your bosses don't adapt, then there are problems. There will be greater scrutiny, that was known, and still reinforced. I don't mind that, if they really do look. There is so much wasted money you would not believe it, my hours are real, and my results are always top notch. people can scrutinize all they want, with me they always get more for less. I don't do classified work often so most of my stuff is heavily scrutinized anyhow. Things always change when administrations do, the first year will be a loss of a lot trying to figure out what the new administration wants, throwing out anything they don't want will be a crying shame. I have seen incredible technologies mothballed, but you just reinvent it when the next admin changes. Life goes on. Govt work is always hard. the hardest part, and this is the biggest danger. Is your bosses and their bosses may fight changes, which if the administration doesn't negotiate, you can loose without ever standing a chance. That is the hardest part, and the most danger. But you have no control over that. So you keep working your hardest, and do your best, and if you are forced to move, you do. I can go FAA, commercial space, NASA, etc. I am not cornered into the military business. There was a lot of money thrown at the military, and it will never be completely removed. Still there are other options. I'll be bidding on the spaceport america's control system when it comes up to bid, I probably won't get it, but I will always be seeking to spread out to hedge my bets.

I'm glad to hear that you feel optimistic about things. I just tend to be a pessimist. I was basing my remarks on the claims of our President-Elect on how much he is going to curtail defense spending and slow down the acquisition of new weapons systems. I hope earnestly that you are right.
