We watched the whole Red Dwarf series last week and I had a hankering for a chicken vindaloo. My wife made it last night from scratch from a supposedly authentic recipe and it was delicious. I don't know if it beared any resemblence to the Vindaloo's that Dave Lister favoured but it was hot and spicy and tasty and several lagers definitely killed it afterwards. :) This week we watched the whole season of Black Books and it was incredibly funny, I highly recommend it to anyone, but there was no theme food from *that* show I would care to eat, though we did drink copious amounts of red wine. "Bernard...I ate all your bees"

For those who do not know: Vindaloo is a meat dish from the state of Goa in India. Its name comes from the Portuguese "Vinha d'alhos" ("wine and garlic"), a Portuguese souvlaki-like dish. When sailing around Africa to India (Goa) Portuguese ships used to preserve pork in a sauce of wine, garlic, pepers and salt. When they arrived at Goa the wine would already turned to vinegar but they would cook it anyways and eat. The Goans liked it and gave their Indian twist (i.e.: thousands of other spices) creating the vindaloo.

You need to have a beard if you want to get the full Black Books effect.

I see myself as more of a Bernard than a Manny so I guess what I need is a filthy suit and crazy hair. I already have the love of wine, smoking and a sarcastic attitude.

Your post was both informative and interesting. Have 5. Don't do it again though because we are just not used to it.:-D

Easily one of my favourite shows I've ever seen. A real shame there was only 3 seasons.

Excellent! That explains the red wine vinegar in it. My instincts tell me this is ideal using a braising technique next time we're going to go with a pork shoulder roast hacked into stew sized chunks and in the oven at low for a few hours in a cast iron pot.
