OK, this debate has been going around our office today. Would you rather be a ninja or a samurai? I choose ninja because they got to do the cool stuff the that samurai considered themselves to honorable to do. You know the fun stuff: stealthy espionage, assassinations, and such. The samurai seemed to be burdened by honor and ethical codes that basically left them as highly trained battlefield cannon fodder. Thoughts?

First of all, I think you're giving a little too much credit to a bunch of guys wearing pajamas and scurying around in the bushes. those aren't the kind of people who strike fear in the hearts of men, they're more like the people I yell "get off my lawn you damn kids" at. but more importantly, you're undervaluing the coolness of the samurai outfit. have you seen the helmets? yeah, darth vader thought they were so cool that after he got his arm and legs cut off and then set on fire, he had some old guy make him one and cram it on his head. how did the women like that? two words: natalie portman. cool swords > fruity "throwing" stars. armor > pajamas natalie portman > almost everything yeah. samurai are much cooler.

You do realise that those 'ninja pyjamas' are a complete fallacy? It is likely they come from kabuki theatre where the set-dressers and prop movers dress all in black to symbolise being 'unseen', the symbolism transferring to ninja, who operated without being seen because they dressed like everyone else.

I vaguely remember that movie. I remember I liked it though. Of course, I'm a nerd and anything with martial arts is cool.

Don't blame me. I voted for Chuck Norris.

a very strong misunderstanding of history.... The samurai had their good side and bad side, they were people. If you consider them like the gunfighters in the old west, if you tried to divide everyone into good and bad roles, ninja and samurai, you would be very wrong, none really fit into the full view of one side or the other. The Samurai had history and tradition, and I won't say that they did not have their good people, but like any society burdened with a powerful class, they took advantage of it. It was "honorable" to steal because you deserved the bounty in the first place, it was "honorable" to kill in cold blood because that person dishonored you through action or inaction (like not being your slave, which you "deserved"). You created a class that was destined for failure the longer it went on. Honor became its own worst enemy being as dishonorable as it was honorable and both at the same time. Again, there were good samurai, and bad samurai, the good samurai were not always good, the bad samurai not always bad. With the Ninja you had the same problem. You had the cannon fodder to die trying to get the best in the group into the building to kill the leader. Worse, if you survived you could just as easily be employed to die getting someone else in to kill the guy who just hired you to kill this one.... Both had cool tools. Ninja historically had some stealth, but not all. they did employ early fire-arms (hand cannons), and did use an array of nasty Samurai based weapons, variants of what the Europeans called a "man-catcher." The Ninja prided themselves on their honor and ethical code as well, as strange it might seem. Honor was a part of society, not your role in the society. Both Samurai and Ninja were variations of that strained concept of honor that society was dealing with. :) that totally ruin your view of Ninja's? :-D To answer your question though... I am Ronin. :-\

Actually one big difference in the Ninja and Samurai, was that it was nearly impossible for a woman to become Samurai. I won't say impossible because historically there were very, very few who hid their gender to do so, and a few died for the cause. Ninja did eagerly employ women. And most of the ninja who survived were women. Because honorably it would be insulting to memory of your boss to believe he was poisoned by this handmaiden who feigns weakness so well.... :-D Women, historically, made the most successful and longest lived Ninjas.

She would be Ronin, or "masterless Samurai" worse than Ninja or Samurai, they surved no one but themselves. They were not always the least, nor the most powerful historically, they were not always good, or always bad either. But they did look out for themselves better than the other two. :-D

Thoughts?

Ninja. I have no interest in espionage or assassination (which is why I'm in the IT industry), but the Ninja had their own honor code as well, and were not always the villains that modern stories make them out to be. Most of what the average person knows about Bushido (the Samurai code of ethics) and Ninjutsu comes straight from Hollywood. The Samurai were often times the villains, in that they'd kill someone on the spot if their master demanded it, and consider it honorable, and the Ninja were farmers that were defending their rights in a land of Shoguns and Emperors. That being said, yeah, the Ninja got to play with some VERY cool toys. :-D

Samurai get all the ladies, ninjas just use rohipnol. Samurai wear salad bowls, ninjas wear head panties. And stereotype ninjas use magic clown powers that don't exist but make for great B-Grade movies!
