My girlfriend goes to school in another state, and I am trying to be able to stay in contact as much as possible. We get to see each other every few weeks, so it isn't SO bad there. But anyway, I bought her a web cam, my laptop has a built in one. We use Yahoo Messenger right now, and I am not impressed with the quality, nor the performance. I am getting about 3FPS right now and we both have broadband connections. So, the question here is, what do you suggest we use instead, I know there are plenty others out there, but since it isn't something that will last long, only a year, it needs to be free. Thanks for the help.

YMessenger always sucked. I've wondered how it got popular  When I was working in China and I was doing the same with my gf/fiancee during that time, we used Skype. It was perfectly good.

Have you tried Skype video chat? Skype has some of the best compression I've seen. Also be sure your webcams' settings are correct, and that they can maintain a good frame rate when tested locally. Good luck on the webcam! Long distance relationships can be hard, but certainly can be well worth it - has been for me!

Also, if you record the chats and make a website, you can make some money on the side....

I second Skype, just make sure you have high speed internet, otherwise it's really annoying.

When faced with a need for good quality, conferencing video chat software arose earlier this year I went searching for freeware to do what I wanted. I found an application called ooVoo that is available in a free and subs based version, the free version gives you 3 way conference video and the subs based gives 5 way. Both had very good video quality even when conferencing. It does not need to be used for the 3-5 way only so it can be used for 2-5 way if subs based. It operates like MSN messenger and has a slight styling of Apple's conferencing tool.
