I love the Task Manager

Being an Aussie in Singapore I read the SMH (Sydney newspaper) regularly. The most irritating thing I find is the flashing adds, thankfully they are all on the right side of the page so I give them my 3 fingered salute ctrl shift exc and up pops task manager to the rescue. Select the application tab and read in peace. TMs positioning is retained between session so I don't have to move it unless I need it for different sites like The Register, another host to flasshy ads. Do ad blockers work for these, I have all the AV and firewall stuff required by corporate but I would love to be able to just nail the more mobile ads.

There's a firefox extension called flashblock, problem is it blocks absolutely everything at first, and takes a little while to build up an exceptions list so it works how and where you want it to.

i use adblock plus in the fox and it removes all those horrid flashy ads and the particularly annoying ones that expand across the page when you are trying to read it.

The trouble with the SMH site is that if you disable flash they switch to animated GIFs, is there any way to turn them off? The smh ads used to all come from a different domain, so I once put a dummy entry in my hosts file for that - killed the ads OK. Personally I read the abc news.

I read SMH from habit, I even prefer ABC, used to work for them and still read the bloody SMH, God only knows why, one day I'll delete the link and then be lost for news :-D

There's no place like 127.0.0.1 I use the hosts file[^] provided by MVPS.org. Update it every couple months, and it'll effectively "block" most of the ad I used to otherwise see. -matt

You might also consider using Host Man http://www.abelhadigital.com/[^] which works with the windows host file. It directs the URL for "blocked" sites to localhost. The great thing is that there is a large enough community that the blocked URL list is pretty darn good. I rarely even see advertizing content anymore.

So, when everyone else reads the paper online, and blocks adverts, the SMH goes bust, who will you blame? Not saying the ads aren't intrusive, but unless you're paying money in some other way, blocking them is tanatmount to theft, surely? yours controversially, Iain.

I don't mind ads in themselves, nice quiet informational ads are most welcome, especially when they defray the cost of maintaining a service, so no I don't want to block all add, just the ones that have constant movement in them or the flashing colour ones will do thanks.

If this were so then some of the ads are tantamount to assault and they should be punished. If SMH would please go bust I'd have to move to ABC who are more restrained in their ads. Yeah I know you guys are paying 8c a day for me to read the ABC.
