Is it normal for beta version of windows live messenger to ask for an activation code sent via sms? Or have I been duped?

Your "Idiot" package is currently on the way to you via postal mail. You are required to mount the enclosed "IDIOT" sign in a window of your house for the next 365 days. Also included in the package is a yellow sign with suction cups for your car window that reads "Idiot Onboard". Lastly, the package includes a variety of sticky labels you must wear on your shirt (one per day). These labels have one of the following printed in bold red text at the top of the label: "DUNCE" "IDIOT" "MORON" "DUMBASS" "OPEN-MOUTH BREATHER" and "JUST IGNORE MY SLOPING FOREHEAD" Nothing shiny is included in the package because you apparently have the attention span of dirt, and are obviously easily distracted. (In the spirit of the season, I feel like I have to mention that this post is meant in jest and is not a personal attack on Mt. Booker. If this had been intended as a personal attack, it wouldn't really look any different than it does right now, but everyone would have been told where to tune for emergency information. I now return you to your previously scheduled chaos.) As an added bonus, you'll receive a complimentary certificate (suitable for framing) that reads, "Yeah, I'm stupid, but at least I don't look like Jennifer Gale."

"Why don't you tie a kerosene-soaked rag around your ankles so the ants won't climb up and eat your candy ass..." - Dale Earnhardt, 1997

Mr. MatrinABooker, To verify if you've been scammed, please submit your Full name, address, date of birth and Social Security number, along with a valid credit card number. Once we have verified you and execute a basic credit check, we'll perform an intense investigation of your personal records to determine the possibility of any identity theft. Thank you, CP Identity Theft Services, Douglas Troy John Smith

I tried a beta of it recently and do not recall such a thing. It was crap though. Too many bugs.

xacc.ide - now with TabsToSpaces support
          IronScheme - 1.0 beta 1 - out now!

Thats a 5 from me John for the entertainment value of your reply. I guess then its a patched version of the installer that I downloaded? Pretty sure I got it from the real 'messenger' download page, scanned it for viruses before running, all the usual.. When I did run it and it started asking me about activation codes, I did a thorough googling to try and find any warnings about 'sms activation scams' etc and came back with nothing. Embarrassed and ashamed I fell for it then really! I'll wear my IDIOT badge with pride.
