I agree. I have never made a new years resolution in my life. If I want to change something, I try to change it today. And if I fail, I don't wait a year to try again. But, I'm sure most people are the same, they just see New Years as a chance to add weight to their resolution.

Oh, the irony . It's always fun to see the latest cannon fodder in the Resolutionary War show up in my gym every year. It starts the second or third week of January, and usually lasts through March. Men and women show up, typically dressed in the mall's idea of expensive gym gear. They never know how to use the equipment and never want to be taught. I would bet half the reason they quit after a couple of months is that they've injured themselves from doing exercises improperly. There's a certain etiquette to the gym that they never adhere to. When you're done with a bench or machine, get off it and wipe it off if necessary. Put free weights back on the rack. If someone else is waiting to use the machine, offer to switch off between sets. It's not necessary to grunt and yell when you're lifting. The big one: use a spotter when you're lifting, so that we don't have to worry about cleaning up the mess when you drop the weight on yourself.

Continuing last years resolution which was to get in shape. I've kept at it faithfully and lost just over 30 pounds since last Feb. and have about 20 more to go. The cool part is that I've been playing ball hockey outdoors with some friends and after 15 or 20 minutes they are all gasping for breath and have to take a beer break and I'm still fresh as a daisy and want to keep playing. It's pretty easy to be the guy in the best shape amongst a group of average 40+ year olds. :)

Sounds like my world. I feel like I'm not doing enough until I look around in the store and see all the folks my age hobbling around like they're 70 (I'm 47).

Anybody have any entertaining resolutions they'd like to share? Personally, I believe new year's resolutions are a waste of time, because if you don't have the discipline to change your behavior at any other time of year, what makes you think you're going to succeed just because the calendar changes?

I disagree. I made a resolution, in 1976 I believe, to put more things off. I haven't got around to making any more resolutions, so I conclude that this is a very effective custom.

I belonged to the local YMCA for several years, before all the kids moved out and I bought my own gym for the things I needed to do, and this particular one was violated by the regulars, the ones that were there when I joined, far more often than by the New Year's crowd.

I wish I could give up playing video games as much as I do. I got into them in high school, and now I play them way to often. I'm going back to school next semester to work towards as Masters in Computer Science while working a full-time software development job. There's no way I'll have time to play games, but I'm sure I'll still play them. They're just way too much fun! But there's so many better things I could do with my time.

I've noticed this varies from gym to gym. I won't lift at my local YMCA, because the equipment is in poor shape and isn't safe. On the other hand, the rec center I used to go to and my current gym are both pretty good in this regard.

Corny-ness factor on a 1-10 scale...oh about a 9 or so. But mine is to do 1 act of random kindness a week (because I've been so fortunate). I believe in Karma.

Actually you should, since I'm still waiting the gift I asked you last Christmas. ;P :)

I used to smoke salmon but the bones kept sticking through the rolling papers. ;)

Many. many years ago my mother smoked a brand called 'Nelson' (UK). We always kidded her she wouldn't die of cancer but she would go blind in one eye.
