It seems to be that time of my life...

Me Ma had the same. I have lost count of the number of bumps and blemishes that they finally found on her, but to the best of our knowledge she has been cleared up. Expect some more to be found now that they are looking. But because the doctor is looking for them, there is much less chance of there being any major problem. As a family we have done a lot of reading into cancers of various sorts and every study seems to indicate that the earlier the problem is found the better the prognosis.

Da this time. He didn't have a suspected problem, he had the full blown A&E/ICU "Shouldn't it be beating?" thing. That must be nearly twenty years ago, and *knuckles on head* touch wood, his condition has been stable through regular check-ups and occassional medication. Admitidly they are both in their seventies, but things do start to go down about with age. For your parents I hope everything turns out okay and I am sure it will.

I thank you for that, and likewise wish your parents well! It is worrying, but with luck and treatment, they should be ok.

My father has just started some treatment for a spot of skin cancer on his nose, this involves a minor surgical procedure, and the doctor is very optimistic about the prognosis on his proboscis. Then yesterday I my mother tells me she is going to see a specialist about some apparent heart problem,(valve fluctuations or something like that). I thought to myself that they are a bit young for this kind of thing, (they are both 59). They have both been fit and healthy their whole lives, and to have them both worried about their health at this age is, to be honest, a bit of a shock. Still, nothing I can do until tests/treatments etc are complete. One has to be optimistic!

I know what you mean being a little down about this. In the last 12 months I have had: - My mother in hospital to remove a cancerous spot on her leg. This was successful with only sugery, and she's not quite as old as your parents either. - My partner in hospital for a (now nearly 4 years old) sinus infection (and I'm not sure there's been much progress since). - My dad in for something or other (I can't remember what this one is). - A personal friend for back surgery for pain due to a coughing fit (kinda makes the flu sound bad). - Another personal friend in for some sort of bowel related thing that caused a pinhole in the intestine (and this was successfully dealt with). - The matriarch of family friends for a hip fracture (unfortnately, she passed away not long after due to complications). And to top that off, I've had enlarged lymph nodes, stress attacks and blood pressure entering the second level of hypertension this year (roll on 2009!!). With your father, their generation spent a lot more time outside as children without the UV protection there is today. And you mother's heart problem could have been there her whole life too, just never picked up or causing problems. I would recommend finding a top heart specialist though, especially if your mother needs surgery to correct the problem - it's one of those things you really don't want accidents with. Good luck getting through it all, hopefully both of them won't be anything more than minor problems that can be dealt with quickly and easily without complications.

I'm very sorry to hear this news. I hope that with modern medical techniques the Dalek family will be back to the finest of health as soon as possible; in many ways it's better to have these things discovered and dealt with than to carry on oblivious. Russell

You seem to have been 'in the wars' a bit. Health is a funny thing, when you have it you take it for granted, once you don't you wish you looked after yourself more!

Absolutely. Better to know! You can deal with things then.

Indeed, I wouldn't have minded a more gradual 'introduction' to it all to be honest. But too right, I've taken my general immune system for granted a bit (I haven't had a sick day off work since August 2006), but it's starting to catch up with me in other ways I think.

Be optimistic Dalek! There are plenty of people that wins in those cases... Is the cancer in an initial stage? If you've detected it soon, then winning is almost sure. I've met a girl that won on a skin cancer that was already spread so there is hope here! Good luck! :rose:

My Mother was about that age when she started having those sort of symptoms. Eventually she had a valve replacement and lived for another 17 years. Of course she had to give up the Bungee Jumping and Mountaineering but other than that she was fine.
