DSL vs. Cable
-
I'm relatively happy with my cable modem service with one exception - too dang much $$. So, I'm thinking of playing the pong game - take up the local phone company on their "we will pay you $$ to switch" offer. After a few months, pong back to the cable company (otherwise known as a boat load of morons). Anyone out there done the switch and have any comments? Guess this is a US question. cg

Why pong?
If I knew then what I know today, then I'd know the same now as I did then - then what would be the point? .\\axxx (That's an 'M')
Well, variation of ping pong. Ping I switch to dsl, take my cash back, after 3 months switch back to cable, take their $200 new customer, go back to dsl, etc.

make sure the cable company does not require "new customers only" (which means you were never a cable customer with them) and the phone company does not require a long tem contract with penalties for early termination.

OIC - Sorry - didn't realise the cable mob would also give you a kickback! Surely they don't give a big enough cashback that it makes it worthwhile?

actually, it appears that they both do. Idiots would reduce churn if they offered long-term customers incentives to stay that way. But they are too stupid. warning on long term commitments noted.

Even with the cost of my 10MB cable connection, there is no way I could down grade to a DSL. Don't care what the $$ incentives would be. That would be like going from a DSL to a dial-up modem. Sorry, never again!!
One day soon, I suppose I should come up with one! Something like: There are times I really miss the old DOS programming days.

If it is a lot of money, you could always ask them to reduce it. I called my cable company a couple of months ago and explained to them that I am going to have to cancel my cable service because of a money situation due to the economy. They gave me a deal that reduced my bill by $30 a month for a year. Just give them a ring and see what they can do before you cancel your service.

You'd actually consider going back to the phone company? In my town, the phone company is SO incompetent they can't even tell you how much your bill will be; they won't even estimate the final total. However, when I had the cable modem installed, the customer service rep told me -- to the penny -- what my monthly bill would be.

I've got DSL (6Mbps down) and have no real complaints. The service has been rock solid. In the past 5 years there has been a DSL related outage maybe twice. I can't comment on customer support because I've never used it. Besides, I like the separation of having the internet delivered over the phone while cable/HD/on-demand are delivered over cable. Cable has gotten better in terms of reliability but it still goes out more often than my DSL connection. With separate connections at least the internet is available when the cable is out. Now if only the power company were as reliable as the phone company....

thanks for all the feedback. I think I'll give the cable folks a ring to see what they can do in terms of adjusting prices. I'll let you know how it goes

Even though the published download speeds are higher (6M vs. 3M) the upload is much lower. And at peak times the cable speed drops to 1M. The DSL cost is half the cable price and is more relible.
Not just the speed differences, but there's more! I used DSL for years then I ended up getting a wireless service, which sucked. Then, I moved and got cable (there was no DSL available), which I still have because I don't have a choice. Yes, the download speeds are higher (than most dsl options) and yes, the upload speeds are lower (than dsl). What I really miss about DSL is stability, and the face that nothing is blocked! I use to run mulitple servers off of my DSL line but with cable, those options go away. Those services (ports 80, 21, etc) seem to be blocked at the local service provider level. DSL never did such things. So, the fun is over! :( The same went with the wireless provider. Most everything was blocked. At least port 3389 was still open.

now we have vs. fiber optic in my neighborhood :) Verizon FIOS is a bit faster than cable due to "sharing the neighborhood line". (No sharing on fiber optic) 20 down / 5 up is nice. And although it costs the same as cable, at least it's some competition for em. But watch out for Verizon's crappy billing system and "websites that don't werk"... I haven't suffered due to them yet, but many many people have...
