"We need to stop hitting Cheyenne Mountain." "Why?" "Because it's not there anymore."

One of the reasons I've always been interested in A.I. is that I wanted to meet Mike, a dinkum cobber if there ever was one.

Most of those tales center on the US and the (theoretically) most secure military establishment in the US is Cheyenne Mountain. It dates back to the Cold War days when the center was established to survive a nuclear attack and retaliate. To most people it represents the invulnerable center of the US military Command and Control for nuclear forces. Of course, today we know better; they really spend their days playing games with WOPR.

I suspect the real reasons it is used includes: 1. Cheap exterior shots. No need to build a set - just use existing footage of the entrance. 2. Now that Reagan won the Cold War, they are more accessible to the public, incl. Hollywood. 3. Using the pre-existing mystique of "Cheyenne Mountain" in the American public's mind as part of the foundation on which to build the story. Claiming the SGC is located at PETA headquarters just doesn't have the same effect.

It's because, as anyone who is someone knows, that's where their keeping the aliens from the Roswell crash in crio-freeze. Since that's for real, then it makes sense to embelish other alien stories around it.

                Thanks. KHadden

And to think, that for Star Trek, Starfleet command is just north of San Francisco.

When I was a kid I lived near there. My father was stationed in the mountain. I have been inside a few times. The Strategic Air Command was never based there. It was in Omaha neb. in a place affectionatly known as 'The hole'. As of the last year or so operations for NORAD have been moved away from the mountain and into the Denver / Colorado Springs area. It was decided that given the distributed nature of computing it was no longer necessary or cost effective to maintain a hardened location in order to provide continued operation in the case of hostilities. Oh, and it is cool. Nobody ever mentions having to pass through one of the largest Army bases in the country to get there though.

It's not, if you ask me. It was used for Stargate movie, then for the series based on that movie: Stargate SG1, and then again for the spinoff series off Stargate SG1, which was Stargate Atlantis. Atlantis and SG1 and all happen in the same storyline as the Stargate movie, so it makes sense that the headquarters of the operation would stay in Cheyenne Mountain. As for the other series you mentioned -- I think they're probably just copycatting the idea from Stargate.
