Does anyone know of an application that is capable of opening .7z files? Another one of those annoying compressed files that no one seems to know how to open:suss:  Thanks :-D

Heh... I avoided it for years 'cause i'm a sucker for a flashy GUI and it's kinda... blah... But, it does work, consistently, and without much fuss about installation or supporting libs. I've started keeping it in my Citrix toolbox now, just so i always have a good tool handy for compressing files before sending them across the WAN.

TugZip[^] also supports 7zip files. Has a few issues, but you might prefer the GUI to the official 7zip tool.

I'm using Far Manager (that's a file manager from Eugene Roshal, the creator of Winrar), and it has a bunch of plug-ins for archives, including the 7Zip format. I'm not into much details, but AFAIR Far is using some king of virtual file system layer, so working with archives is very transparent.

                      Regards, Lev

Why do you hate it? 7-Zip has become my favorite, in fact, only zip program installed on my computer. The 7z format is often quite a bit smaller than a regular zip file. I ditched all the other archive program. 7-Zip doesn't have a real flashy GUI, but it's quite competent, works well, and I don't really use the GUI all that much anyhow. I also made a donation to register the program.

See also this[^] which has IMO a slightly better interface than 7Zip. [mod] Although, if 7Zip is still the same as it was, you do get the source. So you can build your own interface. [/mod]

Odd, 7z is quite common in my experience. Of course as you already know it's 7zip you need. Though whenever I publish a 7zip compressed file I always publish it as a self extracting executable, that's just common courtesy I believe.
