We've had a Fuji S5100 for about 4 or 5 years now, and it's been a great camera. It takes really good pictures. So this Christmas we thought we'd upgrade to a Fuji S2000HD. It's 10 megapixels with 15x optical zoom. Well, we were disappointed in it and took it back. Surprisingly, the pictures weren't as sharp and vibrant as the old S5100. Now we're looking for something else in the same range. Basically a 8-10 megapixel camaera with 15x optical zoom or better. One camera we're looking at that's a bit pricier than the Fuji is the Canon Powershot SX10. I was playing with this at Best Buy tonight, and it seemed really nice. Any suggestions?

I am in the same situation in that my old FUJI 3 Mp camera is about 8 years old and I am upgrading. I don’t know if the small format is a deal breaker but I just ordered a SONY Cyber-Shot DSC-W170 10.1MP. Also it is a range finder which you may not like but it does have a LCD viewing screen for close in work. What sold me on this camera is the Carl Zeiss Vario-Tessar lens. I used to have a Lica range finder film camera before going digital with a Carl Zeiss Vario-Tessar lens and it took excellent pictures. The range on the SONY DSC-W170 is 35mm equivalent 28-140mm which sold me on the 10 MP over the SONY 13 MP which didn’t have quite the range as this one does. I just ordered it today from Circuit City which was less expensive than Best Buy and has a much better return policy (no restocking fee like Best Buy does). Since I just ordered it today I haven’t taken any pictures with it yet but having seen what a Zeiss lens can do on the Lica I am very excited about trying it when it arrives. I don't have any recommendations in that price range, I have been DSLR for 4 years now. However, I never buy until DPreview tries. :) http://www.dpreview.com/[^]

I'll always buy Canon over anything else. I had one of the most positive customer service experiences ever when my old PowerShot S1 went south. It was long out of warranty, but Canon replaced it without any argument, and even paid for shipping both ways.

I'm thinking of upgrading from my Fuji S5500 (4MP) at some stage. The Nikon DSLRs seem to have a good reputation and are a bit more affordable than Canon. But Canon's seem to be the Ferari of cameras :)

What's the price range you have in mind? The cheapest Nikon DSLR (the D40) would definitely give you far better picture quality than any Point and Shoot camera. Also P & S cameras have very poor performance at the deeper end of their zooms. And in any case this whole 5x, 10x measurement is crazy. 5x of what? It should be referred using proper focal lengths. I mean 10-50 and 50-250 are both 5x - so merely saying 5x is kinda pointless.

My first digital camera was a Canon and the CCD died after 2.5 years - which was a little disappointing. A few cameras later, today I am strictly a Nikon guy. (I know that Canon and Nikon have nearly an equal number of followers, so any kind of "which is better" discussion is pretty pointless).

Thirded... (is that a word even?) Also, check out the photography-on-the.net forums[^] in particular, the ones on small compact digitals and G-series digitals. As others have noted, both Canon and Nikon make top of the line products. I've gone with the Canon line and haven't been disappointed (G2, 10D, 40D). What's your budget? You may be able to get into a last-generation DSLR and pick up a nice prime lens or two for some of the higher end compacts. Are you even interested in going with a DSLR? -matt

If I was upgrading, it would be to the Canon replacement for their old S5IS: http://www.usa.canon.com/consumer/controller?act=ModelInfoAct&fcategoryid=144&modelid=17630[^] It takes decent pictures, it has a decent zoom, it is overall a decent camera. For me though, the feature that sold me on the S5IS and would bring me to this new model is that back. It has a somewhat small LCD view panel (I would like on bigger, but..) which swivels out and can be rotated. I cannot tell you how much I use this feature, it seems like almost all the time. No longer do I have to get on the ground to take pictures close to the ground. No longer do I have to try getting up higher to see over croweds, I just swivel the view panel and get the shots. There have been times that I would not have been able to get in position to take a shot without having that swivel back. Not only is it a good feature for taking shots, but it can swivel and flip over so that the LCD is facing the back of the camera, thus protecting it. Another aspect of the swivel view panel is that you can take shots that are at the waist, much like we use to do in old Hasselbald days. I sure wish camera manufactures would get a clue and add this functionality to all cameras. Would even bee cooler if they could make the view wirelessy so that it could be detached for more picture taking :) It is seriously a great feature and after almost a year, I have never damaged it :)

If you look at the camera you will see a viewfinder with lenses at both the front and rear of the camera, That configuration is called a range finder as opposed to a SLR where you view directly through the lens. Not a big deal on a digital camera with a LCD viewer. I tend to use the view finder where appropriate to conserve battery life but use the LCD viewer when taking close ups because it is hard to estimate the offset when shooting close up.

Maybe you misunderstood the Leica had a Zeiss lens. The Sony has a Zeiss lens. I agree the camera body is different but in digital cameras the body is pretty much a box to hold the electronics. The lens is the business end. I don't mean to get into a spitting contest. People seem to have strong affiliations with their favorite camera brand. I believe the lens is the most important part of the camera. Anyway, I hope you find a good camera that you like.
