Happy Year! It's not New anymore. :) I spent New Year's with my sister and some friends, so not much of a family. My brother visited on the 1st or 2nd of January (I don't remember), so the fun continued. The only surprise I found at work this morning was my locker being locked and I have no key to open it.

Here I am, back at work for the first time since 22/12/08. Office is Freezing, there is snow on the ground, I have had to hand crank the pc's this morning! (Not literally) I look around and think... Thank heavens I am back at work, I love my family but 2 weeks stuck together is too much for a chap to bear! Slowly warming up and thinking of starting some work, but in the meantime, Tea and Biscuits! (Alas all I am allowing myself, gotta lose weight) I also have an agreement with my brother, we are spending a month dry, so no booze until Feb! (5 days down, 26 to go!) Who else is glad to be back at work?

Back in today too. Our heating seems to have broken so it could be a cold morning. Thankfully the system updates I put in only 1 day before leaving for Christmas don't seem to have caused any problems. The only minor hiccup was that I accidentally left a bunch of machines in 'full status report' mode so I had about 200 million status report emails in my inbox this morning.

No, I'm not. Having a dry January too. In theory.

I think lots of people intend to have a dry January, I did until my best friend decided she wanted me to meet her new bloke, on the 2nd, in the pub. Needless to say my 'dry' month lasted less than a day. So i'm having a dry 4 weeks starting today :)

And a Happy New Year to You Too! Back in today for the first time since 24th and only a few hundred e-mails waiting - so not such a bad start. Spent Christmas at home in London, night of 24th we do 'Hungarian Style' and day of 24th is 'English Style' - double the fun / food / drink but not presents except for the little uns. On the 27th we - 4 adults and two kids - set off for Scotland in the car. Three days to get up to Inverness, 4 days there and another three coming back. We got back last night after a 2500km round trip. It was damn cold, so cold even the monkeys went inside. Back in the South, it's not as cold but feels worse. But hey, I haven't stopped drinking!

Also first day back after two weeks off. I was glad to be coming back, because the holiday was getting tedious, and the wife was constantly finding DIY jobs for me to do, or cooking up projects we can't afford (new kitchen etc). The kids seemed not to be as bored as I was of watching 101 Dalmations over and over again. But back at work I was meant to be starting in a new development team, and didn't even know where my desk would be when I came in, so I wasn't lookig forward to it to much. Turns out that my PC and all my stuff are where I left them and the new development team doesn't know what its meant to be doing yet. We are in a 'transition period' apparently. I'm just keeping my head down and drinking copious amounts of tea. I've got a full days offsite training tomorrow to look forward to - 'Essentials of Visual Modeling Course 5'.

Well, this is it. In the UK social stuff revolves around going to a pub. I'm supposed to be catching up with various people over the forthcoming weeks and this would normally be done in the boozer. Drinking cokes all night would be met with grave suspicion and a degree of contempt. So the options are to break the resolution or become a recluse. It's 50-50 at the moment....

                Regards, Rob Philpott.

No, we stopped regularly. First day: London to Edinburgh, stopping off in Durham for lunch. Second day: Edinburgh to Aberdeen, stopping at various castles. Third day: Aberdeen to Nairn (were we stayed), via The Cairngorms National Park. similarly we did a round about route taking two days to get down to Glasgow, then yesterday we drove the rest of the way home. BTW, if I'm going for it, longer distances are not a problem. Last summer I drove from London to Budapest in 22ish hours including the ferry crossing.

sealed the deck, re-caulked around the baseboards, touched up paint, smoothed hard ground that prevented gate from opening, cleaned the stairs, took down the decorations.... give me work! I am too tired of "NOT working"!!! :)

It's not too hard to do. Having given up drinking as part of a plan to lose some weight last year, I found that to start with it felt a bit odd ordering J20 and soda etc but now it feels fine, i suspect that most people don't really care what you're drinking as long as you don't spend all the time you're with them commenting on what they are drinking. On top of that most people are glad to get a lift home.

Having never left work I'm not sure I'm any more glad for today than any other day. We make code while the sun's not shining so there is no rest over winter. :)
