Why does my dog like to roll in Alpaca poo?

Simple question - he keeps on doing it - jumps in the dam (that's like pond to you non-aussies) climbs out, shakes himself, then finds the pile of Alpaca poo and rubs himself in it - NOT PLEASANT. Question is, what's in it for him? He hates being washed, and surely if it stinks to me, it must be REALLY stinky for him.
If I knew then what I know today, then I'd know the same now as I did then - then what would be the point? .\\axxx (That's an 'M')

I'm afraid the only way to really find this out is to trade places with your dog for the day. Then you turn your zany adventure into a cheezy Hollywood movie.

Maybe the dog has fleas or ticks and the smell is the only thing that gets the little buggers to leave him alone :confused: or maybe relief from mosquitoes???

I once read in a dog book that one reason might(!) be to take "camouflage" (or how it is called in English) for going to hunt prey.

I'm sure it is! The difference is that it is good stinky for him and bad stinky for us!! :doh: BTW, our dog is same as yours except its not Alpaca poo but usually something like goat or cat poo. He even loves to eat goose poo. Yuk!

Some dogs do that... Following their instincts they need a "special" odour/smell in order to look interesting to their possible boyfriends/girlfriends and to themselves. This makes them to try to gain their smell again after having been washed... Horrible and stinky, but... they love that... This is instinctive so it is really complicated to eradicate it... I had one wonderful dog that meanwhile we were walking on the mountain (even in the cold January) he loved to jump into the first dam and then jump over me... the first day he got me... it was incredible... and well after that of course he tried to become a croquette making stunts everywhere he was able to... In order to wash him we were 2 people always: one was holding his head and the other was making the cleaning... there were some "shower gels" that he hated... and then this make him to try harder to get stinky sooner... Who knows, perhaps trying to change the shower gel... You should talk to your vet. he can give a better advice than any of us... Well some of use are worse than animals but... Good luck with your dog... PS: Just one question: what is his name?
