Yep, they are pretty much the same. The exe name for one version was digger.exe. So we all ended up calling it Digger :-) The accompanying 4-bit music/sound through the PC speaker amazed us all back then.

Last weekend Hubby found an Atari system in really nice condition. It was made in 1981 specifically for Sears and had a cover so major scratches or dings. Came with Donkey Kong, Pac Man, etc. I know they remake these games for every new gaming console, but it was kind of fun and nostalgic to play the games on an old Atari. Oh, and it doesn't work on an LCD screen before anyone tries that. So for those who grew up gaming, what was your favorite game(s) and on what systems?

That was my first video game system! My brother bought one when they first came out in 1977 for $200 and the games at the time were between $20 and $30. I still have two of the systems (one original style system from a garage sale and a newer system from my mother) and about 85 games for it. :) I have a number of game collections for my PS2 that have old system games on them -- two for the Atari 2600, one for the Intellivision, and a couple for the Sega Genesis/Game Gear. The oldest system we ever owned was a Fairchild Channel F[^] system, which pre-dated the Atari by a year. It belonged to my brother, who bought one at a garage sale in the early 80s. Flynn

The first Nintendo Mario and one with a helicopter flying inside some caves/some local product/ were my favorites from the console games. From the PC games the first game I beloved was old DOS game named “Privateer“ with the Clive Owen staring in the cut-scenes. I still can’t find a match for this game among the new ones.

I was never much good at anything more complicated than Pong (or Whaff as Boris Johnson would call it) but just after Space Invaders there was a game in my local pub where you flew a WWI bi-plane around the screen shooting stuff. Crude graphics, but the first game I can remember where you had some freedom to move around. Anyway I loved it but I cannot remember what it was called.

Never had a console, folks couldn't afford it, but at the arcade I did like centipede, Tempest[^], Tron, and Dragons Lair[^]. Edit: On a whim, I looked up whether there was a PC version of Tempest around, and voila! http://typhoon.kuto.de/[^] Looks very cool, I'll be trying this tonight!

Castle Wolfenstein on an old Apple II+. Crappy graphics, (in retrospect), but the characters actually talked to (yelled at?) you through the tinny built-in speaker. At the time, we thought it was just the coolest thing going and played it for hours. :)

There was a game i used to play don't quite remember what the name was but it involved flying a plane on a pink background and flying over fuel cans to refuel. And there were the classics of course PacMan and Donkey Kong. I still have it around at my mom's place I think. Will have to take the dust off and see if it still works. Corrected link

Ummm, i'd say Amiga, and anything that smelled like Shoot'em Up... RType sort of games I also had a ZX Spectrum, and i'd go for the Manic Miner type of games!

I remember my Vic20, our first computer. Blitz and Frogger, what awesome games. Although, playing track and field, Konami Hyper Soccer and Top Gun on the NES are some fond memories. Watching AVGN rip Top Gun apart the other month made me a little sad
blitz; looking back on it about the most boring game you could dream up but we spent hours playing it at the time.

I used to play a fantastic game on the bbc called Thrust were you had to fly a space ship about and pick up a heavy ball that behaved as a pendulum and get back out with it. I found a version that had been recompiled for the PC a couple of years ago but only managed about 4 levels, it seemed really hard.

My first system was an Atari ST model and I love to play Crystal Castles[^] Then I moved on to an PC where Prince of persia did the trick. I'm addicted to gaming ever since. ;P
