Windows desktop shell

Joan was looking for a solution to help his friend's sister have a "bullet proof" version of windows that would be resistant to accidental thrashing by the sister. Scott mentioned IE in kiosk mode for the shell, though that obviously limits what can then do. So... since we're all damn fine programmers, why not use some of our mad skillz and come up with a custom shell replacement that has: Only a few limited options that can be done. Namely, icons that launch WMP, IE (or some other browser hopefully), and an Email client. Perhaps some custom code that lives in the background to prevent things like the "Run..." dialog from being shown, and so on. If there's concern over what get's launched via browsing the web, maybe using a custom built version of Google Chrome instead of IE, since the source code is available and easily buildable if you have VS 2005?

Now that's an article I would love to read. I've often wondered how things like this are done. Obviously your post is more aimed at the developers with the skillz to do this, but I just thought I would put my interest in learning how to do this.

You can do that with Group Policy.

OK, but that takes all the fun out of it :)

Hey, does anyone know how to enable/disable the windows firewall and system restore in Windows XP Home via the Group Policy ? I 've recently removed some spyware from a PC and those two remained disabled by the goup policy. When I enter "gpedit.msc" in the Run dialog it doesn't find it. Is it the Home Edition that's causing this ? Does anyone know if there are other solutions ? :sigh:
