After re-installing Vista, in the ongoing saga many of you are familiar with, my laptop has been stable for the entire day, where previously an hour or two was a record. I'm going to soon use the very helpful Complete PC Backup, once I've installed all essentials.

It kept displaying that UAC thing, and Explorer insists that every folder is a media folder. The second thing was fine until he realized that rating his .cs files a 5 was a pointless gesture.

I'll look into that, thanks, but I really do want to do a mirror NOW.

seagate and maxtor both include Acronis imaging software in their tools. You can download, free, and use.

That's all I needed to know, thanks, but I'm still interested in how the Vista mirror works. Maybe I'll make two. :-\

Nope - sorry. I tried changing the options, and the minute I put a media file in a folder, it changes the column headings in explorer, and I have to change them BACK - AGAIN. Vista's explorer sucks big hairy donkey root.

yes... yes... asking how to change the Vista defaults would lose you man points.... it is like asking for directions... so anything you don't know how to use or change automatically sucks. next time, try changing the bloody SYSTEM defaults rather than the bloody FOLDER defaults. As long as the system is set for "auto" the folder settings are only temorary. Get a tweek tool. Oh yeah... getting a tool would also detract man points.... Vista sucks because you don't know it. thank god we are not hitting 16 cores this year and XP will fall farther behind... oh wait...

Speaking of Vista boxes with lots of cores, is there any way to change the CPU used percentage in task manager from percentage of the total to percentage of a core? On my i7-920 (@ 3.85gigs) the 1-13% range for single threaded (or lightweight apps regardless of their model) makes the CPU% number mostly useless for judging what's taking cycles.

My newly acquired laptop, with Vista Business 64, kept freezing up, sometimes even on the login screen, sometimes after an hour or two, and always while waking up.

How much RAM? There is what I call the Vista Freeze for any serious use of a Vista system with less than 2 GB of RAM.

No, I mean freeze solid, as in die and require several reboots to revive. It's got 1GB now, but it will shortly be 2GB.

Ah. OEM installation, presumably? The OEMs just cannot get an Vista installation right at the moment. (If they didn't install all that crapware, they might have a fighting chance.) I just used Windows Vista Complete PC Backup to transfer my system onto a new hard disk. Straightforward, but you have to extend the partition yourself - the partition it creates is the same size. The only other issue is that, when booting from the Vista DVD, it told me it was going to restore from C: (my external HD, as the new HD was not partitioned yet) to C:. I decided I didn't like the sound of that, opened a command prompt and used DISKPART to create a partition, then rebooted. After that it said it would restore from E: to C: which sounded more friendly.

there was a vista tweak tool posted a couple months back. I nabbed it and promply got spoiled. All the settings were easy from there. Unfortunately since they are comfiscating laptops at work I stopped bringing mine. Although the Army issued a Vista by Nov 2009 order, my boss hates Vista as much as John even though he has never used it because of folks who blog without knowing how to use it, or what has been fixed. Anyhow... long story short, all my Vista machines are at home 25 miles away.... My usual recommendation is get a tweak tool that is organized the way you like. I like the last one posted here, but it is my 3rd tweak tool for Vista. There are about half a dozen free ones, half a dozen in crippleware (often the function you most need is in the paid version) and about a dozen full commercial tweak tools most of which have a demo mode that let's you view but not save/apply settings.

Download DriveImageXML and try it. I'VE NEVER USED IT ON VISTA. But in XP Pro and in 98 works like charm. Easy to use, lightweight and free if you are in your house. http://www.runtime.org/driveimage-xml.htm[^] Hope this helps.
