Co-Location Source Control
-
Does anyone have any recommendations as to how to accomplish co-location source control sharing the same exact source code repository? Our thoughts are to use either SourceSafe or SVN, but aren't afraid of hearing different ideas either. Just for a side note, the situation we are dealing with is two locations that are across the U.S. Thank you in advance.
The biggest problem is synchronising local servers, good process can go a long way towards dealing with that. Ideally Clearcase but I it's pricey. If you have someone who will be gatekeeper at each location then a cheaper solution like SVN would work. Elaine :rose:

Dynamsoft source anywhere, with source hosting ( as someone already linked you to ) is very good, I've had only good experiences with them.

Just say No. Anything else, even emailed zip files would be better.

I have a public server and I'd be willing to set up a domain and offer free SVN hosting to anyone wanting it. I'll sign NDA's or whatever you wish. I could care less about your code mine causes enough headache. But if anyone is interested email me. I'd do that and be happy to. Backups are nightly and off-site. I've never done it before but since I'd use it too I think it would be fun for me to try. I own the server outright. I'm the only person on the server, ever! It's on a 10 meg burstable connection that can sustain download rates from 500Kbps to 900Kbps. To guarantee you are legit I will ask for some type of means for proving you are not scum. I was thinking of having you PayPal me $.50 cents and that you be a verified PayPal holder. Obviously, silver members and above only. Any other ideas for verification? I'll sign any NDAs. But this could be fun.
I even think we could form a CP SVN team for running it and such.

We could do as much as we wanted but I'd need help to pull off something like that.

I work for an outsourcing company, our client is about 60 miles distant and they use Source Off Site (SOS), which I believe is built on top of VSS to allow for remote access. Prior to this I've used subversion, clearcase, Perforce, cvs. Personally I find SOS reduces my productivity, but maybe it's because I'm not expert with it - written a few scripts though to make it behave more like I would want it to.

We have been using https://opensvn.csie.org/[^] with tortoisesvn for a while and have been delighted. It's free and works great.

I'd recommend using subversion. I use it for several projects that I work on with people in different parts of the country. (I use dreamhost to host mine but I doubt that would be considered "professional quality hosting").
We use Subversion internationally. It runs on cheap computers, using cheap software (but will also run on Windows :), and deliberately includes features that benefit distributed teams. /bs

We use a dedicated server at a hosting company and we are super happy with Sourcegear Fortress/Vault. Fortress adds ALM on top of Vault, the source control system. http://www.sourcegear.com[^] It works very well for us in 5 locations between the US and the UK. We use SSL to secure communication to and from the web server.

I work for a large company that uses ClearCase across many developers, products and physical locations. I know this is an expensive solution for most people who pursue this forum. However functionally ClearCase is very powerful, not to cast aspersions on the other source control systems out there. I have used some of the others but certainly not all. We also have nightly replication of VOB's (Versioned Object Base in Clearcase parlance) across multiple locations (US, Europe, Asia). Anyway my point is that if you have the $$, ClearCase works well. But I'm sure the others like Subversion will work fine too.

Accurev has a good solution for this.

+1 mercurial. I use it all the time for development. Distributed version control is the future. It's easy to have local repositories for each developer, and then they can push/pull their changes to central repositories. I have backup repositories on my own server account. It's easy to use, and TortoiseHg gives a very useable experience for Windows users. Jay

SourceOffSite http://www.sourcegear.com/sos/[^] I've worked with it pretty nicely for a very long time.
