Yesterday, when I installed Vista on my laptop, it formatted the disk in a snap. Now I am formatting an external SATA drive, 160GB, and it's taken several minutes to reach only 5%. Is this normal? I suspect the Vista install may only do a quick format, leading to some of the instabilities I've experienced. What is the dope on this?

I haven't tried it yet, but some of my colleagues are running the beta of Windows7 and they report better stability across the board when compared to Vista. Maybe this would be a good place to test this claim. You should also make sure your USB2.0 drivers are installed, but I do expect that windows' install uses a quick format.

Yeah it normally does a quick format. I was quite surprised actually, I go to install click format, look away for a moment, and when I looked back it was done - for a moment I though I hadn't clicked the button. The option for a full format would have been nice, or perhaps it was there and I just missed it... Anyway, yeah a full format will take a while.

I'm pretty sure it isn't there on Vista. I normally check all options carefully and often prefer a full format.
