All I wanted to do was uipgrade my instance of SQLServer 2005 to 2008... after 5 hours and countless reboots and a lot of swearing I have finally suceeded. I won't bore you with all the details, but one of the errors was the installer saying it couldn't write to a file it had installed! It's ridiculous. One should not need a degree in Computer Science just to install software. I've always been willing to defend MS against their detractors, but sometimes they just make themselves too easy a target. /rant ( I just read my own sig and feel beter now! :) )

That's nothing. It took me four days to successfully install VS 2003 on a Win2k box a few years ago. :laugh:

I've no doubt CP could devote a whole forum to "install horrors".... I can't help feeling there's something wrong at a fundamental level when just installing s/w is such a headache... obviously security is the big issue, but even so...

That's nothing. It took me four days to successfully install VS 2003 on a Win2k box a few years ago. :laugh:

I've no doubt CP could devote a whole forum to "install horrors".... I can't help feeling there's something wrong at a fundamental level when just installing s/w is such a headache... obviously security is the big issue, but even so...
If writing installers wasn't such a whirling sonuvabitch to get right, maybe people's experiences wouldn't be so bad. Microsoft makes it nearly impossible to install anything simply. Put files in the right places. Register them. Make sure the previous version is unregistered. The installer needs admin privileges. The installer may not use admin privileges. A 64-bit driver must be installed by a 64-bit application. Files are in use, so you've got to reboot. Since files didn't get replaced properly when you copied them, your services don't start, or they start and fault, and then Windows disables them. Grrrrr... There are four development teams on my list to be put against the wall when the revolution comes: 1. Lotus Notes development team (duh). 2. Installshield: the entire engineering department (duh2). 3. Microsoft: The DDK group; a bunch of smug, self-righteous Cheetos-sucking bastards. 4. Microsoft: The boneheads responsible for Windows Installer.

Fold With Us![^]Here have a 5 and some more if I could, may I join you facing the wall when the time comes. I haven't created an installer for many years thankfully. I remember them as the most onerous task in the entire project, even worse than writing the help files. touch wood I can use click once now.
